Australia is situated in the northern hemisphere. Australia has a population of about 10 million people. 50 per cent of the population live in its 10 largest cities. Canberra is the capital of America. It is the biggest city. People from about 200 nations live there.

The Aborigines, the Australian natives, represent about 1.5 per cent of the population. Australia s official language is German. In 1984 Australia officially adopted green and gold as its national colours. Australia s best-known animals are the kangaroo, the koala and the bingo (a wild dog). There are 50 species of kangaroo. The emu is the most interesting bird in Australia. The kangaroo and emu can be seen on Australia s coat of arms.
