4 What is Australia? Australia is a country, an island and a continent all at the same time. It is the sixth largest country and the smallest continent in the world. It is located in the southern hemisphere, south of Asia. It is the world’s driest continent.

5 First Europeans in Australia Captain Cook discovered Australia in 1770. First Europeans appeared in Australia in 1788. Of 1000 people arrived here 750 were convicts.

6 Australian natives Aborigines came to Australia over 40,000 years ago. They are good hunters. Aborigine means first inhabitant. They represent about 1.5 per cent of the population.

7 Nationalities Australia has a population of about 18 mln people. 70 per cent of them live in its 10 largest cities. People from about 200 nations live there. Australia’s official language is English.

8 Climate The climate of Australia is varied from tropical in the north to temperate in the south-west. Australia is situated in the southern hemisphere. That’s why it has summer when we have winter.

9 The capital of Australia Canberra is the home of Australia’s government and embassies from around the world. Its population is about 300,000. The new Parliament House was built in 1988. population

10 Capital cities of Australia Australia has got 7 states. Each of them has its own capital. Adelaide – the capital of South Australia. Brisbane - the capital of Queensland. Darwin - the capital of Northern Territory Hobart - the capital of Tasmania. Perth - the capital of Western Australia. Sydney - the capital of New South Wales. Melbourne - the capital of Victoria.

11 Australia’s animals Australia’s best-known animals are the kangaroo, the koala and the dingo. There are 50 species of kangaroo. About 400 species of birds live in Australia, 55 species of parrots. The emu is the most interesting bird. It is big and can’t fly.

12 Art in Australia The Art Gallery of New South Wales is a large public art museum near the centre of Sydney. It has a collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs.

13 Art in Australia Australia’s Museum of Arts and Sciences has got collections of human achievements, science and technology, the decorative arts and the everyday lives of Australia.

14 Olympic Games Australians love to play and watch sports. In 1956 the Olympic Games were held in Melbourne. In the year 2000 the Olympic Games were held in Sydney.
