Monday, August 31st Warm Up Read Aloud Read over the “Greek Alphabet” worksheet. Complete the assignment at the bottom. Set up spiral Workshop (don’t worry about this yet~~you don’t know what it means, BUT YOU WILL!) Check yourself before you wreck yourself! Are you? reading independently (10 pgs./day) keeping up with your vocabulary? writing your reading reactions (2/6 weeks) keeping up with your process paper? keeping up with your journals? keeping up with your spelling? finishing any warm ups you need to finish?

Independent Reading Section You have your choice of book. It must be in your independent reading level. 10 pgs. per school day (50 pgs. per week) You may read outside of school or during your workshop time of the period. You will do three important things with your independent reading: Annotated Bibliography (these are turned in three times each six weeks 2, 4, and 6 Reading Reaction (there is one due week 1, 3, 5)

Reading Reactions Reading Reactions You will find a quote from that week’s independent reading that stands out to you. You are looking for a personal connection to the text, something that you like, don’t like, or just find important. You will need to make an assertion/opinion about your quote. An assertion is something you believe to be true and can prove with evidence. You write: 1. title of the book 2. the quote properly documented in MLA format 3. Then, write a ten sentence reaction to the quote making sure to give an opinion and explain why you think this. You must also bring in personal experiences that connect you to the novel. What am I learning? to find significance in literature to make an assertion to defend an opinion to use MLA format

Your Name Date Period Reading Reaction Title of Book by author’s name “This is how to properly document your quote using MLA format (p #).” Pg # where quote was found. This is inside the end mark of punctuation. Ten Sentence Reaction Begins Here. Remember, Assertion/Opinion Evidence/Examples/Personal Stories, etc. to prove your assertion/opinion How many do you write and how often? Every other one WEEK

The summary must be original and have enough details to prove you’ve read the pages. The personal reaction must be original and prove you’ve read the pages.

Annotated Bibliography Your Name Date Period Annotated Bibliography Bibliography citation Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. New York: Scholastic, Inc., 2007. Summary of pages read Your summary should include VERY specific details to the novel (character names, incidents, even quotes). Your whole point in your summary is to PROVE you have really read. Your summary should cover ALL the pages you have documented on your reading log. Personal Reaction to pages read Things you may include: qualified personal opinion of the book (qualified means you back up your opinion) suggested target audience (gender, age, ethnicity, occupations, etc.) personal connections between you (or people you know) and the characters or plot

Vocabulary Section FIVE vocabulary words will be given to you every other week. You will complete a Frayer Model for each word. A Frayer Model includes: the word the definition characteristics examples non-examples This section will be graded every two weeks.

Man, Y we gotta be riting all dis stuf, man!? You are doing this to develop fluency in your writing. You will learn to move from sporadic, short entries to more thought out, longer writing entries with fewer topics. And, you’re doing this so your writing won’t look like and sound like his!
