Kindergarten Teaching Standards n We teach kindergarten according to state and national Common Core standards for our grade level. n Common Core standards were implemented in Kyrene in kindergarten beginning last year. Common Core is currently adopted in 45 states and 3 territories to help ensure that all US students have the same opportunity for academic success and college readiness.

Math Concepts Covered n Number and Operations in Base 10: Work with numbers to gain foundations in place value. n Measurement and Data: Describe and compare measurable attributes, classify objects and count the number of objects in categories. n Counting and Cardinality: Know number names and the count sequence, count to tell the number of objects, compares numbers. n Operations and Algebraic Thinking: Understand addition as putting together and adding to, understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. n Geometry: Identify and describe shapes, analyze, compare and compose shapes. n Mathematical Practices: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, explain mathematical thinking

Please do not spell for your child. n D’Nealian – adopted handwriting curriculum This is an example of D’Nealian handwriting. Teachers attend trainings to further their knowledge and ideas for using technology in our classrooms. This information will be sent home soon with your student for practice.

Skills to Work On at Home… n Tying shoes (taking on and off) n Zipping and buttoning clothes n Hygiene (washing hands and blowing nose) n Writing and spelling first and last name n Knowing address and phone number n Knowing parents’ names and teacher’s name n Kindergarten sight words n Invented spelling.

Report Cards and Assessments n Students are continually monitored and assessed in writing, reading and math. n A report card will go home in January and May. n We will conference with parents after the first and third quarters.
