1 We welcome you to Kindergarten! Your Killam School Kindergarten Team: Nina Balfe Lynne Kasparian Toni-Ann Ruocco

2 What does the Kindergarten experience include? Literacy Learning 1.The Wilson Fundations Program In this program, our children will develop phonological awareness which includes listening, rhyming, syllables, beginning and ending sounds, and word awareness.

3 They will learn and review letter and sound associations using letter/sound picture cards.

4 They will learn how to accurately form letters, with lower case letters taught first, because they are seen more frequently in print. Then, we teach the capital letters.

5 They will learn how to tap sounds to build, spell, and read words as well as learn trick words and write sentences.

6 2.The John Collins Writing Program in which our children will: -draw, write, and express their ideas on paper. -develop their language and writing fluency. -focus on specific writing elements called “FCA’s,” focus correction areas.

8 3.The Scholastic Literacy Place Program which includes : -big books. -small keep books. -leveled guided reading books

9 4. The Daily 5 Literacy Structure It involves children in 5 daily literacy activities while the teacher is working with children in small groups or independently with a child. 1. read to self 2. read to someone 3. listen to reading 4. word work 5. work on writing

10 5.We provide an extra boost for our early literacy learners by differentiating instruction. What does this look like? What does this mean? -Differentiated reading instruction is part of our regular education program, and provides an extra boost for our early literacy kindergartners. -Progress will be monitored during the school year using the DIBELS Assessment (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills). -Participation in small groups will be flexible meaning children can be part of the group for a period of time, and change groups based on their progress and needs. -Support is provided by our reading specialist, reading tutors and classroom teachers.

11 “Everyday Mathematics” Program This program emphasizes: the use of hands-on materials to build understanding of concepts. a problem solving approach using everyday situations. the learning of concepts and skills and mathematical ideas repeated over time in slightly different ways. opportunities to reinforce math skills at home.

12 Mathematical Concepts and Skills The program emphasizes the following concepts and skills: Counting and Cardinality Number and Operations in Base ten Operations Algebraic Thinking Measurement and Data Geometry

13 Social Studies Units of study will include: understanding celebrations and historical figures. understanding now and long ago. using maps (local, U.S., world). showing an understanding of oneself as part of a family, school, classroom community, and society. gaining an awareness of likenesses and differences in families and cultures.

14 “Open Circle” A social and emotional learning program that uses class meetings to address: being a good listener. including one another. cooperating. understanding feelings. teasing/ bullying. recognizing differences. problem solving. positive self-talk.

16 The Arts The arts are integrated throughout the Kindergarten curriculum. Art Music Movement/Physical Education Library

17 Technology The use of technology enriches the learning experience. Our children will: -be taught lessons using a Smart board. -participate in some computer classes with our school library media specialist. -have their Kindergarten learning experiences posted on a grade level “weebly.”weebly
