The highest mountain is the “Zugspitze” (2962 m).

What is the climate like? Lots and lots of rain! In winter it snows quite often in the southern part, close to the Alps. The northern part of Germany near the Baltic and North sea has more moderate temperatures in winter; it rarely snows. Summers are cooler than in Colorado, rarely warmer than 85 0 F. And unpredictable - always bring an umbrella and a light jacket!

Growing season May to October German Harvest Festival (like Thanksgiving) is held on the first weekend in October with parades and delicious food such as Apfelkuchen, plum cakes, onion tarts, etc. Holidays Other holiday foods are duck or geese for Christmas. Christmas is celebrated for 3 days (24, 25, 26 december). The main religion in Germany is catholic and protestant. Unique holiday in December is Nikolaustag on Dec.6 th !

German Eating Habits Frühstück (Breakfast) The classic German breakfast consists of a variety of breads and rolls, honey, jam, and coffee or tea. For those who prefer a savory start to the day cheese and cold meats are also served. For a more lavish breakfast you may also be offered a boiled egg, yoghurt or quark (a very popular cream cheese), fruit and muesli or cornflakes.

German Eating Habits Frühstück (Breakfast) Mittagessen (lunch) Kaffee und Kuchen Abendessen (dinner)

Warm-up Mittagessen (Lunch) Traditionally the midday meal is the main meal of the day. More often than not it consists of potatoes, vegetables and meat. Do you know a typical German dish? In Catholic areas no meat was eaten on Fridays with a fish or egg dish being served instead.

Abendbrot (Dinner) The dinner is often eaten at about six o'clock. As the name suggests (Abendbrot, literally evening bread), it is usually a cold meal served with different kinds of bread, a selection of cheese, cold meat and salad. A small hot dish (often leftovers or a soup) may also be served. Many people drink tea with the meal.

Kaffee und Kuchen (Coffee and Cake) On the weekends an additional snack is often served in the afternoon. A variety of cakes are prepared and offered to family and friends. In Germany you will often be invited "zum Kaffeetrinken" (meaning coffee and a substantial intake of cake) rather than lunch or dinner. Most famous cakes: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Cake) and Apfelstrudel

Last but not least: Dining Etiquette! In Germany people usually eat pretty much everything with knife and fork. Don’t forget them, when setting the table! Even Pizza is eaten with knife and fork! This is a no,no!!

European Recipes Use Metric System for measuring! What are some metric units that you would use for cooking? milliliter (ml) gramm (g) kilogramm (kg) How many ml are in one cup? 250ml is correct What would you need to accurately measure g or kg?
