Map of the World Go over the compass rose

The Equator and Prime Meridian Ask students for their knowledge of the equator and prime meridian.

The Prime Meridian runs north and south It’s 0° longitude

It also separates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The Western Hemisphere is west of the Prime Meridian. The Eastern Hemisphere is east of the Prime Meridian. Refer to the compass rose

Longitude measures how far east or west a location is from the Prime Meridian.

Time zones are created by using 15° increments (= 24 time zones)

Japan is located at 140 degrees east of the Prime Meridian.

What ocean is located at 40 degrees west longitude? Click to show answers

The Equator is 0° Latitude The Equator runs east and west. The Equator is 0° Latitude

The Equator runs east and west. The Northern Hemisphere is north of the Equator. Refer to compass rose The Southern Hemisphere is south of the Equator.

Latitude measures how far north or south a location is from the Equator. Explain how latitude is like climbing a ladder. Phonemic Device

Tropic of Cancer is 20° north of the equator Tropic of Capricorn is 20° south of the equator Explain how latitude is like climbing a ladder. Phonemic Device Tropic of Capricorn

Mexico is located at 20 degrees north latitude of the Equator.

Antarctica is located at 80 degrees south latitude of the Equator.

The closer a place is to the equator (less latitude) the less it is affected by seasons

How can I find a location using longitude and latitude?

Start with directions: 60 N, 160 W Click to show the 60 degree circled click again to show the 160 degree circle. One more click will allow the arrow to move to the correct location.

Which continent is located at 20 S, 20 E Click to show the 20 degree circled click again to show the other 20 degree circle. One more click will allow the name of the continent to appear. Africa

Which ocean is located at 40 S, 140 W Click to show the 40 degree circled click again to show the other 140 degree circle. One more click will allow the name of the ocean to appear. Pacific Ocean

Which continent is located at 50 N, 100 W North America Click to show the 50 degree circled click again to show the other 100 degree circle. One more click will allow the name of the continent to appear.

World Map Ask students about random locations or have students come up with locations to find on the map.
