The 13th Amendment officially ended slavery in the United States forever

Congress set up an organization to help former slaves by providing education, food, and other supplies. The name of this organization was Freedmen’s Bureau

The amendment added to the Constitution which provided citizenship rights for all former slaves and was a response to the Black Codes was the 14th

President Lincoln’s plan for uniting the country after the Civil War was for Confederate states to set up new governments and rejoin the Union

The Black Codes set up in the South after the Civil War were intended to limit the travel, voting, and working rights of newly freed African Americans

Congress wanted tough laws passed that were strict towards Southern states. President Johnson objected to these laws and refused to carry them out which led to his impeachment trials

An immediate effect of the Fifteenth Amendment was African Americans began taking part in government by running for office and voting
