Standards Aligned System April 21, 2011 – In-Service

Standards Aligned System (SAS) Objectives for Today: Introduce the six components of the SAS website Teachers will be able to navigate and access and share valuable information and strategies Teachers will utilize SAS resources to improve student achievement

Standards Aligned System (SAS) Developed by PDE, the standards aligned system is a comprehensive, research based initiative to improve student achievement. SAS focuses on six elements that impact student achievement:

Six Elements of SAS Clear Standards Fair Assessments Curriculum Framework Instruction Materials & Resources Interventions SAS Wheel

Standards Aligned System (SAS) The SAS Portal has been designed to organize and deliver educational content that is aligned to PA Standards. SAS provides educators with: 1)Integrated classroom tools to enhance content aligned to the PA Standards

Standards Aligned System (SAS) The SAS Portal has been designed to organize and deliver educational content that is aligned to PA Standards. SAS provides educators with: 2)Leading-edge networking technologies that create opportunities to communicate and collaborate with peers across the Commonwealth.

Clear Standards Pennsylvania Standards describe what students should know and be able to do. The standards increase in complexity and sophistication as students progress through school.

Fair Assessments Fair assessment is a process used by teachers and students before, during and after instruction to provide feedback and adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve student achievement.

Fair Assessments In Pennsylvania, the four types of assessment are summative, formative, benchmark and diagnostic.

Fair Assessments Summative Assessment - An overall judgment of progress made at the end of a defined period of instruction Formative Assessment - Used during instruction to provide feedback to adjust ongoing teaching and learning to improve students’ achievement of intended instructional outcomes.

Fair Assessments Benchmark Assessment- Designed to provide feedback to both the teacher and student about how the student is progressing towards demonstrating proficiency on grade level standards Diagnostic Assessment- Completed prior to instruction, assesses each student’s strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills

Curriculum Framework The Curriculum Framework specifies what is to be taught for each subject in the curriculum. The Frameworks include Big Ideas, Concepts, Competencies, Essential Questions, Vocabulary aligned to the Standards and Anchors Where appropriate – Eligible Content

Curriculum Framework Big Ideas: Declarative statements that describe concepts that transcend grade levels. Big Ideas are essential to provide focus on specific content for all students. Concepts: Describe what students should know (key knowledge) as a result of this instruction specific to grade level.

Curriculum Framework Competencies: Describe what students should be able to do (key skills) as a result of this instruction, specific to grade level. Essential Questions: Questions connected to the SAS framework and are specifically linked to the Big Ideas. They should frame student inquiry, promote critical thinking, and assist in learning transfer.

Materials & Resources A learning progression is defined as a road or pathway that students travel as they progress toward mastery of the skills needed for career and college readiness. Ultimately, learning progressions provide teachers with the opportunity to determine whether students have navigated successfully through the mile-posts of achievement.

Materials & Resources The learning progressions help to identify those students in need of remediation or are in need of an accelerated curriculum.
