Objectives for Refworks Workshop Access and login to Refworks. Learn to navigate within Refworks. Import references. Organize, edit, and locate references stored in Refworks folders. Generate a bibliography. Modify an existing output style to adhere to Bluebook formatting.

What is ? Refworks is a web-based tool that allows you to create your own database of bibliographic references.

Setting Up an Account Fill out form – it’s free! Click REGISTER. Instantly receive an from Refworks. Now you are ready to log in.

1. Importing References Directly Open Refworks. In another browser, select a database to search. Complete a search. From your results page, mark desired records. Click Refworks link on tab.

Importing References Four Ways to Import References Importing from Text Files Not all vendors or databases support direct export. By saving search results in a text file, you may then import those references into Refworks.

Move References From Organized Folders page, open up the folder by clicking the references to view the references.

Move references from one folder to another. Mark the records. Select the folder from Put in Folder list.

Remove references from folders but not from your database.

Deletes record entirely

Organizing References Sort References Select a folder or group of references from the View or Folders menu. At top right of page, use the Sort by menu to view references by title, author, date, or other fields.

Editing References Viewing Folders View all references View by folder View duplicates Search references and view Editing Individual References From Reference list, click Edit link in right top corner Edit any field and Save Globally Editing References This feature is particularly useful for adding information to records that are missing key fields for a certain output style.

Creating a Bibliography Generate bibliography from a reference list. Use Write-N-Cite to create a bibliography within your manuscript. Use One Line/Cite View to place references in your paper.

Generate Bibliography from Reference List Click Bibliography menu. Select Output Style from drop down menu. Click FORMAT BIBLIOGRAPHY FROM A LIST OF REFERENCES. Select the file format you wish to create. Select All References or References from specific folder. Click Create Bibliography

Use Write-N-Cite Write a paper and automatically place cite in your text. Write-N-Cite will then add bibliography to end of your paper. Write-N-Cite – utility allowing MS Word and IE users to cite references in your paper very quickly and easily.

To install, select Write-N-Cite from Tools menu.

Write-N-Cite will install an icon in your MS Word toolbar. Click on it to start.

Launch Write-N-Cite from Word. Logging in with your RefWorks ID is required. Put cursor where reference should be inserted. Click Cite.

Use One Line/Cite View to place references in your paper. From RefWorks, select the folder. Then switch to One Line/Cite View Mark desired record. Double click the Cite link. Click Select Citation. Use Copy function.

Use One Line/Cite View to place references in your paper. Paste your reference into your document. When finished, save your document. Switch to your Word Document. Place cursor where you want the reference to go.

Use One Line/Cite View to place references in your paper. Return to Citation Viewer. Click Bibliography. Select the desired Output Style. Click Format Paper and Bibliography. Select the saved document from Browse. Click Bibliography. Then save in Word format on you computer.

Output Style Output Style Editor allows you to create or modify existing output styles.

Output Style Since Bluebook is NOT on the list of output styles, you might want to create a custom style for secondary sources in Bluebook format.

Modifying an Existing Style Select existing style from menu. Click Edit to open Output Style Editor. Rename it. Click Save As.

Modifying an Existing Style First, select In-Text Citations and Notes from Citation Type drop-down menu. Then click Bibliography radio button above it. Finally, select an output field. A formatting box for that field will appear on the right. Then select one of the defined Reference Types.
