2 Learning Outcomes In today’s workshop we will learn how to: Create a RefWorks account Access RefWorks on and off campus Explore RefWorks Create folders and Import references Generate a bibliography in multiple citation style formats

3 What is ? RefWorks is a web- based application tool that allows you to create and organize citations and generate a list of bibliographic references in a number of different citation styles.

4 Accessing your RefWorks Account StFX Library Website http://library.stfx.ca

5 Creating a New RefWorks Account 1.Sign up for an individual account 2.Fill out the registration form 3.Select “REGISTER” 4.RefWorks will confirm your registration with an instant email. 5.You are ready to log in to your new RefWorks account!

6 Logging in to RefWorks On Campus: Login using your username and password

7 Logging in to RefWorks Off Campus: The Group Code for StFX is RWStFrXaU. Proceed by logging in with your username and password.

8 Create a New RefWorks Account When RefWorks opens, it will open All References in your account.

9 Exploring RefWorks Have fun! Get to know this tool

10 Creating Folders From the Folders drop-down menu, select “CREATE NEW FOLDER” Enter a new folder name and select OK

13 Open RefWorks. Go to the Angus L. Macdonald library website: http://library.stfx.ca http://library.stfx.ca Select a database to search. Complete your search. Select the articles you want to export to RefWorks Select the RefWorks button Importing References from a database

14 Select “Export to RefWorks” An import page will open and confirm that your references have been imported. Select “View Last Imported Folder” to view these references

16 Go to Google Scholar: http://scholar.goog le.ca/schhp?hl=en &tab=ws http://scholar.goog le.ca/schhp?hl=en &tab=ws In the upper right hand corner, select “Scholar Preferences” Importing References from Google Scholar

17 Scroll down the page to the “Bibliographer Manager” Select “RefWorks from the drop- down menu Save Preferences! Importing References from Google Scholar

18 Google Scholar will now provide you with an option to import selected references directly into RefWorks. Importing References from Google Scholar

26 Write-N-Cite Write-N-Cite allows users to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in their word processor. To use Write-N-Cite with RefWorks you must download a small utility program to your computer. There are versions of Write-N-Cite for Windows users and a single version for Mac Users.

27 How to download Write-N-Cite Open RefWorks Under “TOOLS”, select Write-N- Cite

28 Write-N-Cite In Microsoft Office 2007, RefWorks will install an icon for Write-N-Cite in “Add-Ins”. Click on this to start

29 Launching Write-N-Cite Launch Write-N-Cite from Word. Logging in with your RefWorks ID is required.

30 Write-N-Cite: Entering References 1. Begin writing your paper. 2. Place your cursor where your reference should be inserted. 3. Click Cite.

31 Write-N-Cite: Formatting your Bibliography and In-text Citations In From Microsoft Office 2007, select “Add-Ins” from your tool bar. Open RefWorks Write-N-Cite Select “Bibliography” Then, “Create Bibliography”

32 Write-N-Cite: Formatting your Bibliography and In-text Citations RefWorks and Write-N- Cite will format your paper by adding the in- text citation AND Create your Bibliography
