2 Learning Outcomes In today’s workshop we will learn how to:
Create a RefWorks account Access RefWorks on and off campus Explore RefWorks Create folders and Import references Generate a bibliography in multiple citation style formats

3 What is ? RefWorks is a web-based application tool that allows you to create and organize citations and generate a list of bibliographic references in a number of different citation styles.

4 Accessing your RefWorks Account
StFX Library Website Go to the StFX Library’s homepage: Under “Favourites”, select RefWorks From here, you can log in or create your own account. Note the StFX Group Code. This is the code you will need to access RefWorks if you are off campus.

Sign up for an individual account Fill out the registration form Select “REGISTER” RefWorks will confirm your registration with an instant . You are ready to log in to your new RefWorks account! 6 Logging in to RefWorks On Campus: Login using your username and password There are two ways to log in to RefWorks: On Campus: Log in using your username and password 2. Off Campus: Log in with the StFX Group Code: RWStFrXaU. Then log in to your account with your username and password.

7 Logging in to RefWorks Off Campus: The Group Code for StFX is RWStFrXaU. Proceed by logging in with your username and password. Remember, there are two ways to log in to RefWorks: On Campus: Log in using your username and password 2. Off Campus:The GROUP CODE for StFX is: RWStFrXaU

8 Create a New RefWorks Account
When RefWorks opens, it will open All References in your account. Once you login, RefWorks will open to ALL REFERENCES. This is a comprehensive list of all the references you have created in your RefWorks account.

Exploring RefWorks Have fun! Get to know this tool Have fun and get to know this tool. There are a number of tabs at the top of your screen that allow you to explore the different options in RefWorks. Of particular importance is the HELP option which provides a number of tutorials and help guides.

10 Creating Folders From the Folders drop-down menu, select “CREATE NEW FOLDER” From the Folders drop-down menu, select “CREATE NEW FOLDER” Enter a new folder name and select OK. Enter a new folder name and select OK

Importing References Directly from a Database Google Scholar NOVANET Manually There are a number of ways to import references into your RefWorks account. Today we will look at 4 examples. You can import directly from several databases at StFX, Google Scholar and our Novanet Library catalogue. You can also enter references manually into RefWorks.

Open RefWorks. Go to the Angus L. Macdonald library website: Select a database to search. Complete your search. Select the articles you want to export to RefWorks Select the RefWorks button Open RefWorks. Go to the Angus L. Macdonald library website: Select a database to search. Complete your search. Select the articles you want to export to RefWorks Select the RefWorks Button. This will export your references into RefWorks.

Select “Export to RefWorks” An import page will open and confirm that your references have been imported. Select “View Last Imported Folder” to view these references Select “Export to Refworks” from this page. RefWorks will open an import page indicating that these references have

15 Importing References Google Scholar
Google Scholar also allows us to export references directly into RefWorks.

Go to Google Scholar: In the upper right hand corner, select “Scholar Preferences” Go to Google Scholar In the upper right hand corner you will see “Scholar Preferences”. Select this.

Scroll down the page to the “Bibliographer Manager” Select “RefWorks from the drop-down menu Save Preferences! Scroll down the page until you see “Bibliographer Manager”. Select RefWorks from the drop-down menu. Remember to save your preferences!

Google Scholar will now provide you with an option to import selected references directly into RefWorks. Google Scholar will now provide you with an option to import your references directly into RefWorks.

You can also search the Novanet online catalogue directly from RefWorks. This includes the collections of all Novanet libraries.

Open RefWorks Select: “References” → “Add New Reference” Under “View fields used by” select your citation style. I have chosen ASA Under “Ref Type” select the type of item you are entering content for: (journal, book, webpage, etc.) Enter information in the boxes marked with a red asterisk * Save Reference and put it in the folder of your choice.

24 Creating a Bibliography with RefWorks
Select “Bibliography” from the tab menu Select Output Style from the drop down menu. Click FORMAT BIBLIOGRAPHY FROM A LIST OF REFERENCES. Select the file format you wish to create. Select All References or References from specific folder. Click Create Bibliography

26 Write-N-Cite Write-N-Cite allows users to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in their word processor. To use Write-N-Cite with RefWorks you must download a small utility program to your computer.  There are versions of Write-N-Cite for Windows users and a single version for Mac Users.

Launch Write-N-Cite from Word. Logging in with your RefWorks ID is required.

1. Begin writing your paper. 2. Place your cursor where your reference should be inserted. 3. Click Cite.

From Microsoft Office 2007, select “Add-Ins” from your tool bar. Open RefWorks Write-N-Cite Select “Bibliography” Then, “Create Bibliography”

RefWorks and Write-N-Cite will format your paper by adding the in-text citation AND Create your Bibliography
