University Mission Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students. Moreover, the University is dedicated to attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who are, through their teaching, research and service, committed to the development of distinguished, historically aware, and compassionate graduates and to the discovery of solutions to human problems in the United States and throughout the world. With an abiding interest in both domestic and international affairs, the University is committed to continuing to produce leaders for America and the global community.

University Vision Through its programs of exemplary quality, Howard University will be the first HBCU to become a top-50 research university, while it continues its traditions of leadership and service to underserved communities nationally and abroad. 0 Enhance status as a major comprehensive metropolitan research university (with competitive undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs) 0 Increase excellence in teaching and learning 0 Expand the international footprint and role in world affairs 0 Provide environment of open discourse (Think Tank for the Nation) 0 Extend public service role through expanded engagement with local, national and international communities

Brief History Howard University is one of the nation’s leading historically Black universities. The brainstorm to establish this institution came in 1866, but the university officially began March 2, The university was formed by the First Congregational Society of Washington to be a theological seminary for the education of African-American clergyman, but expanded to include education in the liberal arts and medicine, weeks later. The university was named after Gen. Oliver O. Howard- former commissioner of the Freedman’s Bureau and civil war hero.

Institution Type and Accreditation 0 Howard University is a private, historically Black university, that is focused on research- located in Washington, D.C. 0 Howard University is “fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.” 0 In addition the full accreditation from MSACS- the school holds several accreditations in the following areas across the campus: arts and sciences, business, communications, dentistry, divinity, education, engineering, architecture, computer science, law, medicine, nursing and allied health services, pharmacy, social work, and university libraries.

Governance Howard University is uniquely operated through a board of trustees unit who are responsible for the endowment and governance of the university. The board of trustees is chaired by Mr. Addison Barry Rand, who is the CEO of the American Association of Retired Persons. The board of trustees is composed of twenty-nine (29) members, including the university’s president, from across the nation who work in various fields from education to law. The board of trustees has two faculty representatives from the undergraduate and graduate level (serving a one year term), two students from the undergraduate level (serving a one year term), and three alums (who are elected for three year terms).

Governance Continued 0 The Board recently conducted a year-long review, initiated to address the considerable change that has occurred at the University within the last decade, i.e., transitions in leadership and changes in the higher education environment as well as the Board’s need to conduct a review of itself. The review was conducted (1) to provide the Board with the opportunity to engage in the same rigorous review that the University underwent in all other areas of its operations, and (2) to ensure that the Board was appropriately organized for effective leadership.
