THE MISSION Oral Response to Literature

History Story takes place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay The story is set in the major River systems of Argentina Three groups fight over the native Indians

Portugal Portugal is expanding it’s kingdom in South America’s. According to Portugal the native Indians are not people but animals. They should be captured and used as slaves with no human rights. A piece of land that previously belonged to Spain, fall into the hands of the Portuguese. There are however Jesuits on the land.

Spain Spain is also expanding it’s kingdom in South America. Spain claims they are not involved in trading of slaves. The Jesuits differ.

Jesuits The Jesuits are missionaries belonging to the Roman Catholic church. Their motto is: Ad meijoram Dei gloriam (to the greater glory of God) They believe in spreading the gospel through education and whatever other needs the church may have in a new community. They dedicate their lives to the Indian colonies in South America and hopes the church would offer them protection from the settlers. They even train armies to fight off the settlers.

1705 The story takes place in the year 1705 Spain already destroyed all the Inca Indians during the 1500’s so they are used to destroying natives. Portugal makes lot of money when gold is discovered in Brazil and their attention focuses on Brazil.
