After the defeat of the Aztecs and Incas, the Spanish began to remake the Americas in the image of Spain. This began the long history of Spanish imperialism in Latin America. Spanish missionaries brought the Catholic faith, building resembled Spanish architecture, and the Spanish language was taught to the natives. Spain gained complete control of the South American mainland with the exception of Brazil, which was controlled by the Portuguese.

During the 15 and 1600s, Spain dominated South America. South American gold and silver sustained Spain's economy. Spain also set up Sugar Plantations. In order to provide a workforce Spain started the Encomienda System which provided the Spanish with free labor. Due to possession the American colonies, Spain reached a Golden Age.
