The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Established in 1894 in Lausanne, Switzerland Responsible for organizing the modern Summer and Winter Olympic games Countries bid the committee to host the games Often includes attempting to sway the decision by any means possible Members vote by secret ballot

2016 Summer Olympic Bid Bid between Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, Tokyo, Chicago Despite lobbying by President Obama, Chicago lost in first round Rio moved on to win and Brazil became the first South American country to host Olympics J-twB38UWkwww.youtube.com/watch?v=I J-twB38UWk

Why Chicago Lost Only speculations Overly restrictive passport and visa policy Anti-Americanism Early assumptions that Chicago would make it to the final round Tensions between IOC USOC

Why Brazil Won Country is immersed in almost every type of sport Long history of hosting international sporting events President Lula attended presentation and voting and lobbied for Brazil Lula expressed the need Brazil has for the benefits hosting the Olympics provides =k57u9-jRj1wwww.youtube.com/watch?v =k57u9-jRj1w

Finance Application and Candidature expenses alone US $49 million Entire expenditure expected to be upwards of US $12 billion Both Olympics and World Cup will create hundreds of thousands of jobs and further stimulate Brazil’s already booming economy

Economy The U.S. will invest $14.4 billion in Rio 2016 Olympic project. The expected impact on Brazil’s economy is $51.1 billion between 2009 and Direct investment between is $30 billion, indirect investment $90 billion. In the period before the games 120 thousand jobs will be created each year.

Benefits of Hosting Olympics Attracts investors. Infrastructure investments. Base materials, engineering, construction. Tourism.

Infrastructure Must be at least 49,750 rooms to meet IOC standards Will build 9 new sporting facilities and refurbish and use 25 existing facilities Will build 150 km of new highway to connect Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport and Olympic zones

Olympic Tower A welcome tower. Will use solar energy to pump water during the day. Water will power turbines which will provide energy during the night.

Security High crime rates. Shootouts are not uncommon. Violence in subways. Rio to spend $530 million on security in Rio’s slums – favelas.

Discussion Questions What future economic benefits will hosting both of these events provide to Brazil? Does hosting the Olympics and World cup force Brazil to invest in its infrastructure when otherwise wouldn’t? What possible benefits does the U.S. hope to gain from investing in Brazil?
