6 What is the status of Science Fairs in your area? –Existing: Please complete if your country has participated in Intel ISEF How many science fairs are held? –One : IRIS – Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science is the Intel India Science Fair –most of the chain schools at their individual level hold a Science Fair –In addition to this there are several government held state fairs How is the community or government involved? –Yes, IRIS is a fair in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Confederation Of Indian Industries (CII) Approximately how many students entered this year, ( academic year)? 1500 students submitted their synopsis –New: Please complete if you’re just beginning to have science fairs What is the interest? Country STEM Education Challenges Identifying key challenges in your country esp on STEM education will help you to focus when you build country action plan later: What are the top 3 obstacles and challenges you face in STEM education in your country? (Below are Sample Topics; feel free to choose your own topics; please identify and summarize only three areas). very few research facilities available K12 syllabi concentrates more on grades and mere reproduction of information than promote higher order thinking skills / research Pure Sciences not followed as a career option as it offers low monetary opportunities

10 I. High Level Goals What do you want to accomplish for your school, region or country? Look at long-term (3-5 years) and short-term goals (1-2 years) Long term goals –Improve the quality of science/mathematics education for students & move away from rote-based/exam focused learning –Strengthen IRIS, as a way to motivate students towards research based learning –Teacher professional development for STEM –Incentivize students (consider for admission to reputed colleges) Short term goals –THIS YEAR: Widen net for entries (via better coordination with state fairs through NCERT and DST) –THIS YEAR: Improved visibility for IRIS (media coverage) –THIS YEAR: “Side shows” during IRIS - Arvind Gupta, etc. –THIS YEAR: More stakeholders (CSIR, Industry) - Stalls –1-2 YEARS: Couple NCERT teacher training with IRIS

Please list the results you want to see; –Increased number of admissible entries to IRIS –Increased success rate at ISEF –Adoption of progressive policies on STEM education, including curriculum and teaching methods –Expand SRC to cover all regions

IRIS – coordinate with KVs, JNVs, NCERT/DST state fairs 10% of entries at IRIS should have come through these channels SSI/Intel/NCERTNov 2010 IRIS – Have more sessions, such as science-based toy making, experimental science sessions, etc. 1 session per day, in parallel with IRIS session Shweta/BASE/SRCNov 2010 IRIS – Get more stakeholders involved (CSIR, Industry) Stalls by CSIR, CIIShwetaNov 2010 Expand SRC – better defined roles (Limited to scientific inputs: Judging; Mentoring; Workshops). At least 2 IRIS workshops in each region (N/W/S/E) in time to motivate entries to next IRIS Shweta/SRC/BASE/NCL Outreach Feb 2011 Formalize role of SSI (all logistical support to IRIS; responsibility for organization of IRIS) MOU between Intel and SSIIntel/SSIDec 2010

Continuing The Momentum Built; ASEA2010 Next Steps & Call for your participation One of key goals of ASEA2010 is to sustain the network among participants and collectively move forward to support STEM education and capacity building of educators across Asia; –Organizers will create “Asia Community of Science Educators”: Yes –On Day 4, organizers will call for “ASEA2010 Declaration”, asking for continued engagement and collaboration; Yes –As part of sustaining strategy for ASEA2010, organizers will call for “ASEA Steering Committee” among delegates/speakers/organizers Yes –Steering Committee may provide regular webinars and online activities, throughout the year until the ASEA2011 Yes
