FOOD TRANSPORTATION AND PRODUCTION Market Research in Turkey

What products are local and what products are transported from abroad? In our research, we found that we have a lot of alternatives for a specific type of product. And most of the products are local. Of course, the products have a great variety. The location and socio-economical neighbourhood effect the product choices. Moreover, familiarity with lifestyle and lower price are the main reasons for preferring local brands. In high socio economic region, they are lots of exported products, and high class international brands.

Local Products Bread Butter Milk Olive Oil Meats Fruits like apple and oranges Vegatables like potatoes and tomatoes Water

Exported Products Fruits especially bananas Vegatables like carrots Coffee Cacao Mineral Water (well-known brands) Biscuits

Most travelled products Bananas from Ecuador The distance is 11,462 km. This graph is for only 1,000 km. The actual CO2 emission rate is 0.55 kg. Production regionNorth America Product formfresh Production emissions0.05 Transport emissions0.05 Waste emissions0.00

Most travelled products Coffee from Switzerland The distance to Turkey is nearly 3,000 km. According to the same calculation the avarage CO2 emission is 0.15 kg.

Should we buy local products or imported ones and why? Mostly, YES. Imported products damage the economy, the environment, and the local producers. As an answer to this question, let’s watch a video together.

Local vs. Imported

What is the impact of transportation on the environment? Transport activities have direct, and indirect effects to environmental problems. In some cases, they may be a dominant factor, while in others their role is marginal and difficult to establish. Second, transport activities contribute at different environmental problems, ranging from local (noise and CO emissions) to global (climate change), not forgetting continental / national / regional problems (smog and acid rain).

Effects of Transportation to the Air Large scale diffusion of pollutants High growth on a short term basis of the concentration of pollutants because of local conditions (e.g. smog) Photochemical reactions caused by ultraviolet rays, notably over ozone, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide Climatic changes Acid rain Synergetic and cumulative effects when pollutants are combined (e.g. smog and greenhouse gases)

Effects of Transportation to the Humans Odors Noise Cardiovascular and respiratory problems Susceptibility to infection Drops in life expectancy Injuries, incapacity, hospitalization, death Damage to structures: loss of useful life, corrosion of metal structures (bronze, steel, etc.) destruction of historical and cultural monuments

Is fair-trade important? Has it been provided? Fair trade is an important issue that must be provided by each country. Fair trade protects the rights of small producers. Because of the difficulty to compete with the big and international producers or brands, there must be some written or unwritten agreements for both small producers and international companies. It is an arguable issue whether fair trade agreements are being provided efficiently or not.

What imported products are fair trade? In Turkey, we have lots of fertile lands for agriculture. Most of vegatables and fruits can be classified as fair trade. For example, potatoes, oranges, tomatoes, and etc. However, people prefer some well known brands for some types of foods like coffee, cacao, chocolates, and biscuits.

How much food we throw away/waste and how we can change that (statistical data) 214 billion Turkish liras = 71.3 billion Euros is being wasted in each year. The economic dimension of wastes food or energy in Turkey is very high.

Wasted Products - Bread 123 million bread are being produced every day. More than 7 millions bread are being wasted every day. The total cost for that waste is 200 milion Euros for each year.

What can be done with 200 million Euros? 1000 avarage sized schools 100 high capacity and high equipped hospitals 250,000 monthly income of an avarage worker 8000 Volvo V60 cars 400 Ferrari 1.5 Christiano Ronaldo !!!

RESULTS Please be aware of the impacts of imported products to our common environment! Try to use local products as much as you can do! Please don’t buy more things than you can eat. Don’t do shopping when you are hungry Wasting even only one bread has terrible damages to the economy of each country. Read more and more about recycling.

RESULTS This project, SuSu World, has been enlighten us deeply, and it will be a beginning in our lives to act for a better life by applying all the actions that were made during our project timeline. The world is ours, and we can live in a better environment by using our intelligence capabilites even the governers can’t realize the importance.

Thanks for all your attention Be Sustainable to Sustain the World
