1 Human Impact on the Biosphere

2 Human Impact on the Biosphere
7 Billion People be.com/watch?v=sc 4HxPxNrZ0 How did we get so big so fast? be.com/watch?v=V cSX4ytEfcE

3 Humans in the Biosphere
Humans depend on Earth’s nutrients and Energy cycles. We use the Earth to power our: TV Lights Cars Airplanes Our homes & cities The T-shirt we wear and the paper we write on comes from plants that need the Earth’s cycles.

4 Humans in the Biosphere
How are we part of Earth’s Energy & Nutrient cycles? The way we use resources and produce waste affects Earth’s energy & nutrients cycle.

5 Humans in the Biosphere
Technologies developed by humans have allowed for continued human population growth. Developments in Agriculture, Medicine and Transportation have increased the number of people the earth can support.

6 Humans in the Biosphere
How many people can Earth hold? Where is the carrying capacity? One thing is for sure; the Earth can not hold an unlimited amount of people…

7 Humans in the Biosphere
Agriculture Development of gas powered equipment Produce great amount of food Medicine Lowered infant deaths Limited the spread of disease Transportation Trains, trucks, boats & airplanes move food & materials around the world

8 Pressure on Earth’s natural resources
Over million of years, natural processes change dead organisms into substances that we use today as oil & coal. Energy Usage These are NONrenewable resources We use them much faster than they form!!! Renewable resources Can not be used up or Can be replaced as fast as they are used

9 Nonrenewable & Renewable Resources
Wood ?? Drinking Water ?? Metal ?? Soil ?? Wind ?? Natural Gas?? The number of people Earth can support depends on how resources are used! The US uses more resources and produces more waste than any other country on Earth.

11 Human Impact on Air Pollution
Humans in the Biosphere

12 How have humans contributed to the destruction of ecosystems?

13 Have humans caused acid rain?

14 What happened to the ozone layer?

15 Causes and Effects of Air Pollution
Global Warming Caused by an increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere Effects include increase in earth’s temperature, bizarre weather patterns, melting of polar ice caps Causes and Effects of Air Pollution

16 Global Warming Let’s take a closer look at the Green House Effect …

17 Global Warming

18 Causes and Effects of Air Pollution
Acid Rain (pH = 5.6) Caused by the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide from factories Effects include soil erosion, death of animals and vegetation, erosion of buildings Causes and Effects of Air Pollution

19 Causes and Effects of Air Pollution
Ozone Depletion Caused by the use of coolants and aerosol cans Effects include increased UV radiation, skin cancer and eye disorders Causes and Effects of Air Pollution

20 The Public Policy Act (PPA)
Look at each slide and identify 3 things: 1) Define the Problem 2) Gather the Evidence 3) Identify the Causes The Public Policy Act (PPA)

31 At the conclusion of the PowerPoint presentation, each student will create his or her own Public Policy Act that our people in our city can follow to reduce air pollution Create Your Own PPA

32 ALL steps of the PPA must be addressed in this assignment:
Define the Problem Gather Evidence State the Cause Students must also include an educational poster or brochure to increase air pollution awareness in our city Create Your Own PPA

34 Threats to Biodiversity
Helping the World by conserving Biodiversity 11 min. 25 Endangered Species 11 min

35 Plant Earth 100 million years in the future 50 min.
