The Three Parts of an Essay

3 basic parts Introduction Body Conclusion

Introduction Consists of one paragraph. (5-8 sentences) Begins with an opening sentence that will “hook” the reader. (quote, story, startling information, statement, statistic) Contains a thesis statement-this is one clear sentence that will explain to the reader the main point of your essay. Presents three examples or ideas to support your thesis statement. The three examples are what later will be developed into your body-each example being one body paragraph.

Body Consists of three paragraphs 1st paragraph details/elaboration on example one 2ndparagraph details/elaboration on example two 3rd paragraph details/elaboration on example three Each paragraph should have three to five sentences Use transitional words and phrases to strengthen the organization, such as: First of all, In conclusion, Secondly, As I have stated, Finally, Indent to show where a new paragraph begins

Conclusion Consists of one paragraph Reviews the body paragraph points briefly. Restates the thesis statement in different words.
