Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS) Electronic Health Record (EHR) Training Program EHR Point of Care (POC) Lab Entry

POINT OF CARE LAB ENTRY How to order and result POC labs in EHR

Log in to EHR, select the patient and the visit, and then select the POC Lab Entry tab from the EHR toolbar at the top of your EHR screen.

You are now in the POC Lab Entry window.

Select the ordering provider from the drop-down list.

Select the test you want to order and result from the Test drop-down menu. Note: The Test menu may vary by facility.

You can change the date and time the test was performed here if needed.

Now click the Nature of Order/Change drop-down list. The Policy option refers to a standing order (such as UA dip or pregnancy test) Verbal, Written, and Telephoned options are as stated. Be sure to document appropriately. You will never use the Service Correction option.

Now enter a sign or symptom that answers the question: Why are you ordering this laboratory test?

You can now enter descriptive text (whatever you wish) in the Comment/Description box or use the canned comments.

Here are the canned comments. Select the one you want attached to the laboratory result and press OK. You can add as many as you wish.

Now enter your results in the Result field.

Result possibilities are controlled in RPMS to help prevent the entry of spurious results. Below is an error message that displays if you try to enter a glucose of 1000 mg/dl.

After you enter a result (this is a good place for a time out to verify patient ID, correct test ordered, and correct result entered), press Enter and the result screen will turn yellow and flags will appear if appropriate to the results (1). If for any reason you do not want to finalize this result, you can cancel the order and start over. If you are satisfied with the result, click Save (2).

The result is now in RPMS lab and can be accessed as needed. Notice the “free text” comment at the bottom of the Laboratory Results screen.
