CONJUNCTIONS

A Conjunction is a word used to join words or groups of words. Different kinds of conjunctions have different jobs. There are three main types of conjunctions : Coordinating Conjunctions, Correlative Conjunctions, and Subordinating Conjunctions.

COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS Coordinating conjunctions can join single words or groups of words. They always connect items of the same kind. Guards and forwards (two nouns) On land or at sea (two prepositional phrases) Judy wrote the number down, but she lost it (two complete ideas) Some common coordinating conjunctions are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS)

CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS Correlative conjunctions are pairs of conjunctions that connect words of the same kind; they are just like coordinating conjunctions, but they ALWAYS come as a pair. Both Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler were exceptional boxers. We want to go not only to Kathmandu but also to Pokhara. Either we will succeed this time, or we will try again. Common correlative conjunctions: both/and, either/or, neither/nor, not only/but also, whether/or

SUBORDINATE CONJUNCTIONS Complex sentences have two clauses, one independent clause and one subordinate clause. A subordinate conjunction starts a subordinate clause. Subordinate conjunctions provide a transition between the two ideas in a complex sentence. They also make it obvious that one clause is less important than the other.

1.Louisa will wash the sink full of her dirty dishes once her roommate Shane cleans his stubble and globs of shaving cream from the bathroom sink. 2.We looked on top of the refrigerator, where Jenny will often hide a bag of chocolate chip cookies. 3.Because her teeth were chattering in fear, Lynda clenched her jaw muscle while waiting for her turn to audition. 4.As Samson blew out the birthday candles atop the cake, he burned the tip of his nose on a stubborn flame. 5.Ronnie begins to sneeze violently whenever he opens the door to greet a fresh spring day. 6.Even though Dana persevered at the calculus exam, she was only adding another F beside her name in the grade book.
