1 Grammar Unit Miss. Boucher

2 Conjunctions A conjunction is a word used to connect words, phrases, or clauses.

3 Coordinating Conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance. Coordinating conjunctions are: and but or so

4 Subordinating Conjunctions
Are used to connect a dependent clause to another clause. A dependent clause has a subject and a predicate but cannot stand alone. Subordinating conjunctions are: because before, during, when, while although, unless

5 Correlating Conjunctions
Correlative conjunctions are sort of like tag-team conjunctions. They come in pairs, and you have to use both of them in different places in a sentence to make them work. They get their name from the fact that they work together (co-) and relate one sentence element to another.

6 Correlating Conjunctions
Correlative conjunctions include pairs like “both/and,” “whether/or,” “either/or,” “neither/nor,” “not/but” and “not only/but also.”
