Social Cognitive Theory EDF 250 Part II: Chapter 6 cont.

Wednesday, September 22nd  Behaviorism Review  Social Cognitive Theory  Chapter 6 Self-Assessment (small groups)

Behaviorism  Classical – (Pavlov)  Involuntary/Emotional/ Physiological  Behavior follows stimulus  Neutral stimuli assoc. with UCS  Ex. Learners assoc. classrooms w/ warmth of teachers – pos. emotions  Operant – (Skinner)  Voluntary  Behavior precedes stimulus  Consequences of behavior influence subsequent behaviors  Learners attempt to answer to questions, are praised, so attempt increase.

Social Cognitive Theory Presentation

Social Cognitive vs. Behaviorism Social Cognitive Behavior  Observable behavior, mental representations, expectations, beliefs  Environment, personal factors and behavior all influence each other  Reinforcement and punishment cause people to form expectations. Rein. only works when learners are aware of what behaviors will be reinforced. Nonoccurrence of expected reinforcers act as punishers. Behaviorism Observable behavior Environment influences behavior Reinforcement and punishment are direct causes of behavior.

Self-Assessment  Small groups – one group at each table  Read the question, discuss and decide on a response.  COPY THAT RESPONSE ON PAPER (in the event you don’t get finished in class you’ll need to have your group’s answers to submit)  Hit SUBMIT ANSWERS FOR GRADING  FILL IN YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME  Send to Instructor at  You might want to send a copy to yourself for studying or if the doesn’t go through to me, you can resend it without having to do it again.  You will hear from me by re: points awarded

Closure and Review  Behaviorism – Pavlov and Skinner  Social Cognitive Theory  Read Chapter 7 (Information Processing), submit Ch. 6 self- assessment, post Tech. #1 on SSF
