Subject and Verb Agreement

Sentences Sentences have two parts: The subject (who or what) The verb (what the subject does or is)

Find the subject and the verb The basketball team won the tournament. Subject (Who) Team Verb (What did they do? Only the action word) Won

Agreement Subjects and verbs must agree in NUMBER. Words we use to show NUMBER are Singular Plural

Agreement Singular means ONE.

Agreement Plural means MORE THAN ONE.

Agreement If the subject is singular the verb must be singular. If the subject is plural, the verb must be plural.

Agreement Singular NOUNS do NOT end in S Dog, candy, mountain, person, thing (There are a few exceptions – mess)

Verbs Singular verbs DO end in S. The dog runs around the house. The mountain rises from the plains magesticly.

Agreement The cat sits. The door opens The song is beautiful. The player was tired.

Agreement Plural nouns DO end in S. Students, Players, Oceans, (There are some exceptions – sheep, children)

Agreement - Verbs Plural verbs do NOT end in S. The students look happy. The players want to make baskets. The oceans are full of fish.

Agreement The horse RUN OR RUNS around the pasture. HORSE is singular, so The horse runs.

Agreement The kittens PLAY OR PLAYS with the string. The word kittens is plural, so The kittens PLAY with the string.

Agreement Write two sentences with a SINGULAR subject and verb. Underline the subject and verb in each sentence. Write two sentences with a PLURAL subject and verb. Underline the subject and verb in each sentence.
