2 EVERY VERB MUST AGREE WITH ITS SUBJECT Singular Subject = Singular Verb Plural Subject = Plural Verb

3 The Confusion of English Grammar To make a noun plural, we add – s Singular: girl Plural: girl s To make a verb plural, we take away the – s. Singular: he talk s Plural: they talk

4 Watch the Verb Endings! Singular (+ s ) He/She/It run s Joe run s The girl run s Plural ( - s ) They run Joe and Maria run The girls run

5 Tip for Subject/Verb Agreement Generally, if the subject DOES NOT end in –S, the verb will. If the subject DOES end in –S, the verb won ’ t.

6 The girl dances. No –S on subject -S on verb

7 The girls dance. -S on subject No –S on verb

8 Let’s Try It Out… The students (love, loves) their English class. Ms. Bubley (want, wants) to watch the movie The Giver. They (shop, shops) at the farmers’ market every weekend.
