Population control

BiodiversitySustainable Carrying capacity

Describe the carrying capacity of an ecosystem. Explain why populations cannot increase in size indefinitely. Describe the importance of biodiversity. Explain how the biodiversity of an ecosystem contributes to its sustainability.

IF conditions are ideal - excess food, water, shelter, few predators - population will grow rapidly. Ideal population growth TIME POPULATION “Exponential” growth cannot continue.

Conditions are never ideal, a population cannot grow indefinitely. “Real” Population Growth Environment sets limits on population growth. TIME POPULATION

Carrying Capacity: Maximum population (average) of a species supported by the environment. Populations fluctuate around the carrying capacity.

There is 10 million different species on earth The number of different species in an ecosystem is called the biodiversity. Reducing biodiversity can cause a "domino effect." Leads to the collapse of an entire food chain or food web.

We are losing 20, , 000 species per year

Sustainability is when a system can survive, function and be renewed over time for use by future generations. Ecosystems rely on the cycles to renew matter, and biodiversity to maintain food webs.
