1 Warm- Up Question: “The bird of war is not the eagle, but the stork.”
-Charles E. Potter (What are your thought’s on this quote?)

2 Vocabulary: (Please take notes!)
Population-a group of organisms of the same species living in same place at the same time. Carrying capacity-largest size at which population density can be sustained indefinitely. Two kinds of population growth: Exponential-rapid increase during ideal conditions Logistic-initially rapid increase, slows, then level off

3 Lessons to be learned from biological population growth:
In nature, once a population reaches carrying capacity for its environment, some limiting factors keep the population from growing larger. If a population exceeds its carrying capacity, more individuals die than are born so that the population again returns to its carrying capacity.

4 Application of population biology to human population growth:
Scientists estimate that every minute worldwide, 230 babies are born and 90 people die= human population is growing at a rate of 140 people per minute (annual growth rate of 1.7%). At this rate, the world’s population will reach 9 million in the year 2020 and 18 billion in the year 2060. Scientist estimate the carrying capacity of the Earth for the human population is between 8-11 billion.

5 Take a look at this: Human population growth through out history video: Human population website:
