POPULATIONS
2
EQ: What factors influence population growth in an area?
Share your answers with your elbow partner. Share with the class.
3
Population: a group of organisms of one species in the same area.
4
Biotic (prefix Bio means life)– any living thing
5
Abiotic – non living thing
6
Overpopulation– excess number of same species living together in the same place.
7
Exponential Growth : when population growth expands or increases at a constant pace
8
Limiting Factor : a factor that inhibits population growth of a species population.
9
Logistic Growth : is when the population growth rate decreases as the population reaches carrying capacity. Accounts for limiting factors
10
Competition : When organisms’ attempt to use the same resources
Competition : When organisms’ attempt to use the same resources. (food, shelter, water)
11
Carrying capacity : the maximum, number of organisms of a particular species that can be supported indefinitely in a given environment.
12
Scale : the structural change in size of a population
13
Reflection: Now in your notebook on page 1 answer the Essential Question using at least 5 of your vocabulary words in the paragraph.
14
Community : a group of interacting populations of species living in the same area.
15
Biodiversity : variety of life on Earth.
16
Ecological diversity: is the variation in the ecosystems found in a region.
17
Habitat : the natural home or environment of an animal or plant.
18
Niche : an organism's role in an ecosystem.
19
Population Distribution : the arrangement or spread of people living in a given area.
20
Population Density : is a measurement of population per unit area or unit volume
21
Resource partitioning : When species divide a niche to avoid competition for resources

22
Species richness : is the number of different species represented in an ecological community
