2.Phonics/Language Arts There are two domains that must be mastered before your child can be promoted. 1.Math 2.Phonics/Language Arts

Phonics What does Phonics consist of? Uppercase and Lowercase Letters Letter Sounds Blending sounds to make words

Phonics Programs Scotts Foresman Phonics Teaches letter sound as well as beginning, middle, and ending sounds of words. Teaches new vocabulary. Teaches correct ways to write the letters.

Phonics Programs cont. Saxon Phonics Teaches letter sounds and blending letters to make words. Teaches beginning sounds and visual discrimination of words. Helps to match capital and lower case letters.

Promotional Requirements for 1st Grade Recognizes and identifies capital and lowercase letters of the alphabet Recognizes and identifies letter sounds Recognizes and writes first name Recognizes Shapes Counts a number of objects to 30 Identifies numbers 0-20 Reads 30 sight words in a minute

Sight Word Standard ELAKR4 The student demonstrates the ability to read orally with speed, accuracy, and expression. The student a. Reads previously taught high frequency words at the rate of 30 words correct per minute.

Sight Words Each nine week grading period, there is a new list of 25 sight words. There are 100 total for the year. By the end of the year, every child should be able to read at least 30 sight words in one minute. In order to be promoted to first grade, they should at least know 30 words.
