NWCSD Technology Acceptable Use Policy Review

Respect the Privacy of Others Students will keep their passwords confidential and not attempt to learn the passwords of others. Students will log off, restart, and change passwords in order to protect information. Students should not attempt to read the files of other classmates. However, teachers and administrators have access to all student files. Users with access to student records may not use, release, or share these records except as authorized by Federal and State Laws.

Respect Intellectual Property Students will not engage in unlawful acts. It is illegal to steal music, videos and software from other websites. Students will not download their own software on District computers. Students will not steal others’ work. Students should not download at home (unless it’s for an educational purpose).

Respect computers and each other Students should not damage computers or files. Students should not use tools or information in a way that will lead to a lawsuit or criminal charge (for example copy files or download music or movies). Students should avoid creating or sending pictures or words that might hurt somebody.

Respect Your Personal Safety Students will not give any personal information (address, phone number, full name, etc.) to someone on the Internet. Students will tell an adult about any instance that makes them uncomfortable. Students will not contact others over the Internet.

Academic Respect and Responsibility Students must respect that the computers are for learning purposes. Students also need to respect the directions given to them by their teacher. Students are responsible to use computer time wisely. Students are not allowed to go on social websites or install e-mail or IM software.

Respect your role in our digital community Students will NOT… send or receive offensive material on the laptop. use inappropriate or threatening language over the Internet or E-Mail. (Language that is: abusive, threatening, hateful, obscene, offensive, insulting, or sexually offensive). violate copyright laws or trespass into other user’s directory. communicate with others unless for an educational purpose.

Continued respect your role in our digital community Students will NOT… Display, gain access to, or transmit material inappropriate or harmful to minors. Pretend they are someone else or a group of others. Employ the network for illegal or commercial purposes.

NWCSD Website Development Regulation Review

Teacher Website Safety School websites will be advertisement free and will not be used to make money. School websites will not link to personal chat rooms, or social networks like Facebook. When classrooms use blogs, wikis, social networks and podcasts, the teacher is responsible for maintaining the content and protecting students from bad language, offensive material, and bullying. When students use blogs, wikis, social networks and podcasts the topics will be only related to school.

Student Safety and Privacy To keep students, teachers and the school safe we need to follow certain rules: Students should not put their full names on work done on the internet, only first name and last initial. Student work can be used as an example of quality work if permission is given. (Be sure to turn in your form!) Private information should not be posted (address, telephone numbers and email addresses). School field trip dates and locations as well as activities should not be posted. File names should not be named after the student.

Third Party Sites If you leave a district owned website, the site may be blocked. Sites can be blocked because they may be bad. Our filter is not 100% right all the time. Students be careful! Parents, please monitor your child while using the computer at home.

Website Content The district website is trying to show the best quality student work and information and will remove poor quality work.

Website Content Any copyrighted materials cannot be posted without permission from the copyright’s owner. Students cannot post non-school related materials such as campaign ads, animal rights, opinions, etc.

NWCSD 1:1 Computing Parent Agreement

Parent Responsibilities I , a 5th Grade parent, must return the computer by the end of the school year so my child can use it for the next 4 years. I can connect this computer to our home internet service. If internet service is not available, I will contact my child’s classroom teacher. I will set up a safe place in my home to protect the computer and to help my child fully participate in the 1-to-1 computing program.

Parents’ Guide to Computers Parents must agree to supervise their child at home on the Internet. The District is NOT responsible for Internet misbehavior. The child will be responsible for caring for the computer, but if something does go wrong, the parent should notify the child’s teacher. Parents will not be responsible for paying for accidental damage. If the laptop is stolen, please notify the District and provide a copy of the police report, case number, and any other information. Theft of the computer is subject to investigation. Parents will not be held financially responsible for a stolen laptop.

Who Is Responsible? Read over the NWCSD Technology acceptable use policy and discuss it with your child. Your child can be removed from this program if they don’t follow these expectations. A parent can be held financially responsible only if a child purposefully damages the computer. The cost of each laptop is $533.00.

NWCSD 1:1 Computing Student Agreement

Me and My Laptop Student Pledge I will take care of and know where my laptop is at all times and will never leave it or loan it out for the next 4 years. I will charge my laptop battery at home every day!

Laptop Guidelines Students should always keep food and drinks away from the laptop. If there is a problem, don’t try to fix the laptop on your own. Instead, call the district help desk and notify your child’s teacher. Students should carry their laptop only in the computer case. Please keep laptops free of decorations and writing. Students are allowed to decorate their carrying case.

Student Laptop Responsibility Laptops and cases can be inspected at anytime without prior notice. Students will follow NWCSD Technology Acceptable Use Regulation policies. Students will report any damage or loss of laptops to their teacher. Students will return their laptops, power cords, and case in good working condition.

Life Balance Technology vs. Everything Else

Balance Technology is wonderful but needs to be used in moderation. Remember, in school we are still going to write with paper and pencil for some tasks. We’ll integrate our netbooks where it’s appropriate. It’s a good idea to break up computer time with other activities. Student need to be encouraged to stay involved in sports, music, activities or be responsible for household chores. Kids still need to go outside and have fun!

Balance It is okay for your 5th Grader to teach parents and siblings things they have learned about their technology tools. Siblings should not be using the 5th Graders computer for non-school work. Student’s should ask themselves, “ Am I going to the computer just because I’m bored?” If I don’t have school work, I should be doing something else! A computer is not a replacement for your best friend!
