Only top teeth can be seen when the jaws are closed. They have 60 teeth. They can grow up to 3000 teeth. Alligators have U shaped snout.

Alligators and crocodiles are in the same family. It’s called crocodilians. They are reptiles. The name alligators comes from a Spanish el legarto. There are only two kinds of alligators. There are 14 kinds of crocodiles. They look like dinosaurs. They are feet long. Alligators can be dark gray or black. Alligators have no fur.

They leap very high. They can hear and smell very good. Some times they can walk with their bodies high off the ground. It’s called the high walk. The will puff there neck to show they’re ready to fight. They can weigh up to 300 pounds.

Alligators live in Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Alligators also live in Asia.

Did you know alligators can swim up to 6000 miles? They swim slowly to catch their prey. They rarely swim in salt water.

Alligators eat birds, turtles, snakes, and fish. Alligators can go many months without eating. They may stay perfectly still to catch their prey.

Alligators are cold blooded. Did you know cold blooded animals eat less? People hunt alligators.

When a baby alligator hatches, it’s up to 10 inches long. The alligator’s nest is 6 feet [1.8 meters] wide. Baby alligators eat fish, frogs and birds. A group of eggs is called a clutch. Alligators can grow up to 15 feet long. Babies are black with yellow stripes or splotches
