3 Box turtles are reptiles. Reptiles are cold blooded and their body temperature changes with the weather.

4 They look like a helmet with a tail, legs, and a head. It’s shell color is black and yellow with orange markings. They can close their shell almost completely. They have their skeleton on the outside of its body.

5 Box turtles are 3 inches tall and 8 inches wide. Baby turtles are called hatchlings. They lay 3 to 8 eggs at a time.

6 They live in woodlands and go into water to bathe. In the winter, they live on land under leaves and other woodland brush.

7 It eats mostly plants, but will eat snails, insects, berries, flowers, fish and frogs. Its predators are skunks, raccoons, minks, snakes, and rodents. It protects itself by hiding in its shell. We like this animal because it has a beautiful, colorful shell and cool eyes.
