Supplemental Reading and Math Instruction Grades K-6

Reading Services Grades K-3 Response to Intervention and Instruction started during the school year. Scheduled three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday for a 35 minute period. All students in the grade are assigned an Intervention group with a qualified teacher. Title 1 Staff works with students in small groups during Intervention targeting the students’ area of weakness in reading. Areas of focus include: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary fluency, and comprehension.

Math Services Grades K-6 Grades 4-6 the Title I teacher pushes into classes supporting the classroom teacher while instruction is being presented. Grades K-6 students are pulled out of the classroom if they are struggling with a skill/concept for a 30 minute period so the Title I teacher can offer support. This instruction is delivered in addition to the regular education using a variety of materials and strategies.

Title I Teachers at Bullskin Mrs. Nancy Shaw is a qualified teacher who services the children in both reading and math. She provides services in the classrooms along with the regular classroom teacher, teaches Intervention groups in grades K-3, and provides instruction in addition to the regular curriculum using a variety of materials and strategies. Ms. Mary Fantuzzo is the newly hired reading specialist who services the children in Intervention grades K-3. She is responsible for looking at data from both AIMS web testing and Diagnostic testing to determine each student’s strength and weakness in reading. Using this data she is able to group the students into Intervention groups to provide them with the additional support they need to become better readers.

The Importance of Parents Attend parent/teacher conferences Review updates regarding your child’s progress. Attend workshops and parent meetings. Call the teacher if there is a problem.

Title I Funding Title I is funded by the Federal Government. We are able to provide these programs based on the poverty rate, and the number of students in our district who receive a Free or Reduced Lunch. Therefore, it is very important that anyone who feels they may qualify for a free and reduced lunch to fill out a form that was sent home at the beginning of the school year. The purpose for this funding is to provide Highly Qualified Teachers who are PA certified in elementary education, have a Master’s Degree as a reading specialist, or are a mathematics professional.

Which schools are Title I schools? All of the elementary schools in the Connellsville Area School District and the Junior High School. Who is the Director of Federal Program? Tammy R. Stern, Ed. D
