The Battle of Shiloh By: Mireyda Villanueva

What was the Battle of Shiloh? It was one of the bloodiest battles that the Civil War had ever seen. The battle was between the Union Army and the Confederate Army.

When and where did it took place? The battle took place at Pettsburg Landing. The date was April 6,1862

How did the battle begin? On April 6, 1862 the Confederate Army with 40,000 men under General Albert S. took the Union Army with 45,000 men by surprise. Most of the Union Army was ill and not strong enough to fight back so the Confederate Army won the first battle.

Who lead the Union Army? William T. Sherman was Shiloh’s first commander. Shiloh’s second commander was Pierre G.T. Beauregard. Beauregard was waiting on 20,000 men who were going to be sent by General Earl Van Dorn.

What happened during the battle? A lot of soldiers from both sides died. The Confederate Army had more soldiers than the Union Army did. One of Shiloh’s commanders [Johnston ] died during the battle.

Revenge Time!!! On April 9,1862 Grant and his army attacked the Confederate Army and made very good progress in retaking most of the land that had been lost on the first day of the battle.

The end of the battle! The battle turned out to be another obstacle in the path of the Unions relentless conquest of the Mississippi Valley. The focal point of the battle, then became the crossroads at Shiloh Church.
