Task Using your text books make notes on the following benefits gained from taking part in physical activities: Increase fitness Help the individual feel good Relieve stress and tension Increase self esteem and confidence Improve health For enjoyment Mental Challenge You have 15 minutes!!

Quick Task Look at the THREE categories from last and write at the side of each box on page 10 / 11 which category the benefit comes under.

Relieving Stress and Tension Opportunities to Take Mind of Things Sports allows people to escape from the daily pressure of everyday life and gives them time to reflect. Endorphins These increase during exercise. They can relieve pain and produce a feeling of happiness. Reduces Muscle Tension When stressed muscles contract. Exercise causes them to relax and return to their normal state. Decrease Boredom Exercise and sport allows people to test themselves (Physical / Mental Challenge) and allows them to deal with more stressful situations. Anger Management Exercise provides a socially acceptable way to release negative energy. Better Sleep Exercise is proven to help people get more sleep. Relaxing Some types of exercise helps people relax and feel calmer e.g. yoga

Task On page 13 explain the benefits that would be gained from taking part in physical exercise for the two reasons given. HOMEWORK Complete page 14. Explain why a doctor would advise the two people listed on the page to start doing more exercise. RELATE YOUR ANSWERS to benefits looked at over the last TWO weeks.

Lesson 3 - Objectives Develop knowledge and understanding of why people participate in physical activities. Experience past exam questions and understand how these are marked

Reasons for Taking Part in Physical Activities Co-operation Competition For a physical challenge Aesthetic appreciation Development of friendship and social mixing.

Cooperation People like / want to be part of a team and enjoy the social benefits this creates. Working in groups helps to improve teamwork and cooperation which are often vital not just in sports like rugby and netball; but also in everyday life. This encourages performers to support, look after and encourage team-mates.

Competition People like the atmosphere and emotion that can only be produced within a competitive situation. Competition can be thought of as psychological (mental) both in terms of the preparation required and the getting away from the stresses of everyday life. When competing people often put aside their problems to focus and concentrate for doing well in their sport.

For a Physical Challenge People take part in sport to challenge themselves both physically and mentally. Often people come back to a sport which they have not done for a long period of time (e.g. since school, they have been injured). Some people really push themselves to get better and develop in a sport or activity.

Aesthetic Appreciation Movements in sport are sometimes seem as elegant and thinks of beauty. Often it is the observer who appreciates the performer although the performer often knows through feeling if something has been done correctly. Examples: hitting the perfect cover drive, scoring an excellent goal.

Development of Friendship and Social Mixing Taking part in sport means involvement with other people which includes fellow participates, coaches and officials. Participates often get to know more people, make new friends and develop lasting friendships. Training alone can be quite lonely and requires a lot of discipline and motivation, whereas being part of a club / team helps people to mix socially, helping them to motivate themselves as they do not want to let their friends down.

Past Exam Questions Using the information looked at over the past 3 lessons, answer the four past exam questions on pages 19, 20 and 21. You have 20 minutes Task Using the exam criteria for the four questions you have just done mark your work, making sure you correct any mistakes you have made.
