1 How Exercise and Diet Affect Fitness

2 Exercise to Be Fit EXERCISE- is any activity that maintains or improves your physical fitness. To improve fitness you need to OVERLOAD your body by exercising your body more than you normally do.

3 Overload and Rest Overload tires your muscles and uses fuel so the muscles can do the work needed. During rest your muscles repair themselves and become stronger. Overload followed by periods of rest prepares your body for harder exercise in the future. Overload should be increased slowly. Too much overload too quick can cause injuries.

4 Choosing the Correct Activity
Different activities improve different components of fitness. What types activities would help improve the 5 components? Muscular Strength Muscular Endurance Flexibility Cardiorespiratory Endurance Body Composition

5 Eating Well to Exercise Well
In order to get the most out of exercise you need to eat well. The food you eat becomes the fuel your body uses during exercise and recovery/rest.

Fruits and vegetables are good for quick energy and provide vitamins and minerals Breads, grains and pastas provide carbohydrates which are used as energy for activity Lean meats and beans provide protein your body uses to build strong muscles. Dairy and green leafy vegetables provide calcium your body uses to build strong bones and muscle.

7 Eating Well to Exercise Well
In order to perform at your best during activity and exercise you need to give your body good fuel. Junk foods and high fat foods are not good sources of fuel. Some high sugar junk foods may provide a short quick boost of energy but the body will burn through and fuel it provides very quickly. Not eating enough food will also cause you to not perform as well as your body will not have enough fuel and energy.

Exercise will benefit all three areas of your health. Physical Regular exercise helps your overall physical fitness. You become stronger Your heart and lungs work better You become more flexible Body composition improves by burning fat and increasing muscle. Coordination can improve.

Mental and Emotional Benefits During exercise your body produces chemicals called endorphins that help you feel calm. Exercise will also relieve the tension caused by stress. Exercise improves blood flow to the brain which will help you feel more awake and help you think more clearly. As your fitness level increases your self esteem will also improve as you tend to feel better about yourself. Your confidence in your abilities may also improve.

Social Benefits Exercise gives you a chance to meet new people with similar interests. Teammates may become friends outside of the activity you are participating in. Participating in physical activity with others puts you in a group who also like physical activity. These people will encourage you to keep active and support you in your activities.
