Are You Healthy? Have a chat with the person next to you. Consider the following questions; Do you think you are you healthy? If yes, why? If no, why? How could you improve your health? What is health?

What is Health? Health Not smoking No illnesses

Health The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as: “a state of complete mental, physical and social well-being, not simply the absence of disease”

Health and Fitness Fitness is therefore one aspect of Health. It can be described as “being able to complete the days tasks with enough left over for emergencies” Considering this description, is David Beckham fit? are you fit? can an elderly person be fit?

Health and Fitness So Health is a combination of physical, social and mental components and requires a person to have a balance of all these areas. Whereas Fitness concentrates on the Physical – training the body to meet the demands of a sport by improving specific components.

Health So we have seen that to be healthy requires a balance of social, mental and physical components. We are now going to find out about these different components. The Physical Component involves your body functioning at it’s peak. The Social Component is to do with how well you interact, cooperate and deal with other people. The Mental Component is to do with how well you concentrate, approach life and cope with stress.

Health & Fitness How do we start to become more Healthy or more Fit? –Take part in a Training Programme So if we want to improve our Health we would do a Health Related Programme And if we want to improve our Fitness we would do a Fitness Related Programme

Health Get into groups of 3 or 4 In your book, list as many benefits of, or reasons for, taking part in health or fitness programmes. You have 5 minutes Now we want to think about whether these benefits/reasons are Physical, Social or Mental.

Health On a double page in your book write three headings: Physical Mental Social Cut out each box from your worksheet and stick them into your book under the heading which you think they lie in. For example Burns up stored fat

Health Suggest some of the reasons for/benefits from taking part in physical activity for the following people: –A retired person –A young mum –A young, talented hockey player. Make sure you mention social, physical and mental factors

Adopting a Healthy Active Lifestyle In order to be healthy you have to be physically fit, but as well as exercising you also need to be socially and mentally well adjusted. If you lack the social and mental components you can still be physically fit but not classified as healthy. Exercise is therefore the link between health and fitness.

What makes you healthy? Write a paragraph in your book explaining why you think you are a healthy/unhealthy person. Think about what we have learnt in the last 2 lessons.
