Team Teaching  Remember – you’re not alone!  Communication is key  Talk with your JTE as much as possible  If in doubt, ask your JTE about grammar points, lesson plans or any unclear information  Help each other  JTE: Expert about students and teaching  ALT: Expert about native English

Keep In Mind When Planning  4 Skills of Language Learning  Speaking, Listening, Writing, Reading  Your Students:  Level, Learning Styles  Your Class:  Size, Time, Atmosphere  Relevance/Objective  Progression of Studies

Keep In Mind When Planning  Appropriateness  Age, level, culturally  Anticipated Problems and Solutions  Clarity of Instructions  Keep it simple!  Necessary Materials  Do you or your JTE need to prepare anything special?  Logical Use of Language

Basic Lesson Structure 1. Greetings 2. Warm-up 3. Lesson Introduction / Dialogue 4. Explanation / Practice 5. Activity / Activities 6. Wrap Up

Greetings and Warm Up  Greetings  Good morning/Good afternoon!  How are you?  What day is it? / What’s the date? / How’s the weather?  Warm Up  Get them thinking in English!  minutes  Review material or general games

Lesson Introduction / Dialogue  Dialogue/Skit between JTE and ALT  JHS: Ask students target questions  Grammar Point: “I like ~”  ALT says “I like tennis. What sport do you like?”

Explanation / Practice  Explanation of Vocabulary/Grammar  JHS: JTE will probably take charge  Elementary: ALT or HRT  Practice of Pronunciation  Repetition  Songs & Chants  ALT can give example sentences  ALT asks students questions

Activity/Activities  English Instructions + Demo with JTE  Keep it simple  Remember: 4 Skills, Progression of Studies, etc.  Okay to reuse same activity  Change the rules a little = new game!  Make it fun!

Wrap Up  JHS: Quick re-cap of the language studied  Homework (if any)  Usually issued by JTE  Farewell Greeting

Common Teaching Materials  Big flash cards  Introduce vocabulary  Touch game  Missing game  Keyword game

Common Teaching Materials  CDs  English songs “Hello Song” “Head, Shoulders, Knees, Toes” “London Bridge”

Common Teaching Materials  Worksheets  Betting Game  “Who Am I?” Game

Common Teaching Materials  Toys

First things first!  Take inventory of the materials you already have!  YOU HAVE FREE TIME BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS!!! Use it wisely…  Alphabetize your cards  Make a catalogue of available materials (esp. multiple schools)  If you have set lesson plans, check to see if you have the materials necessary of each lesson  If not…

Make your own materials!  Card program

Make your own materials!  Your imagination is the limit!  Cards are probably the most commonly used teaching material, but you can make different materials… such as…  SANTA FUKUWARAI サンタ福笑い  (Japanese “Pin the Tail on the Donkey”)

Make your own materials!  English Boards are great for creativity as well!  Caution: Ask JTE before spending more than a few hundred yen on English Board, teaching materials, etc.

Purchasing Materials  You have the option of purchasing materials (games like this Surprise Gorilla); however, ask ahead of time—some schools may reimburse you!

Create to your heart’s content!  Especially if you have ample amounts of free time, explore your school’s craft materials  BW and Color Printers  Laminators  Image enlarger  Markers  Paint  Glue  Construction paper  If you are not an Arts & Crafts kind of person, get creative on the computer (esp. images of famous people are popular)

General Tips  Be prepared!  Write out a lesson plan for yourself  Make a checklist of materials you need for each class  Be flexible!  Last minute changes are often necessary  The same activity may not work for every class  Be energetic!  Lead by example, students will follow  Try to have fun and let the students have fun
