Welcome to 6 th, 7 th & 8 th grade ELD!

Hello, my name is Mrs. Hnatczuk  It is pronounced “not-chuck” (with a silent H). I have been an English teacher for over 15 years.  I work hard to be a successful educator, and I expect you to work hard, too!  I take what I do seriously, but I also like to have fun while teaching. Introductions

This class is designed to help build your skills as an English speaker. It is a program specifically for students whose families speak a second language at home. By law, we are required to provide additional English instruction, which will help you to be a fluent English speaker. If you feel you have been mistakenly placed in this class, speak to me this week. ELD Placement

Name Plaque: Step 1 Create a name plaque by folding your index card in half the long way.  I will collecting and passing out your name plaques each day to help me remember all of your names.  This will be your first graded assignment for this class, so be sure to follow directions and pass it forward each day!

Name Plaque: Step 2 Write your first name and last initial clearly on both sides of the name plaque (e.g., Clint T.).  Be sure to write your name neatly with markers or colored pencils so it is easy to read.  You can also decorate your name plaque if you have any spare time.

On the inside section, write at least three sentences describing at least three things that might be interesting to know about you.  For example, describe your family and pets; favorite movies, books or sports; recent successes or life goals; summer vacations or dream vacations, etc.  Be prepared to share at least some of this information with your classmates. Name Plaque: Step 3

Classroom Mingle: Introducing Yourself During this activity, you will be practicing your listening and speaking skills by introducing yourselves to others and learning a little about them. There are many ways to greet people. Let’s take a look at some tips to properly introduce yourself:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46WP_n9KoaE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46WP_n9KoaE  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug_mM46577w&list=FLNI5Xv7h LEgttsyopm94JOQ&index=3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug_mM46577w&list=FLNI5Xv7h LEgttsyopm94JOQ&index=3

Classroom Mingle: Set Up To begin, everyone needs to stand up and clear a path around the room, so we can mingle. When the music begins, remain seated or quietly move about the room without speaking or congregating.

Classroom Mingle: Step 1 When the music stops, calmly find a ONE person to meet or greet.  If you don’t know the person, start by briefly greeting him/her and telling him/her your name.  If you already know the person, you might greet him/her by name and ask how the person is. After brief introductions, start up a polite conversation.  You can talk about the things you wrote on your na me plaque or another appropriate topic.

Classroom Mingle: Introducing Yourself & Others During the next part of this activity, you will be introducing yourselves and others and learning a little about everyone. When there are more people to greet, it can be confusing, so let’s take a look at some tips to properly introduce yourself and others:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgdkRwnA78M&list=FLNI5Xv7hL Egttsyopm94JOQ&index=2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgdkRwnA78M&list=FLNI5Xv7hL Egttsyopm94JOQ&index=2  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eclIkKUgbg&list=FLNI5Xv7hLEg ttsyopm94JOQ&index=1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eclIkKUgbg&list=FLNI5Xv7hLEg ttsyopm94JOQ&index=1

Classroom Mingle: Step 2 Mingle with your partner until the music stops again. Then, calmly find another PAIR to greet.  One person should politely begin by introducing him/herself and his/her partner to the other pair.  Next, one person from the other pair should introduce bhim/herself and his/her partner.  Once everyone has been introduced, begin a polite conversation and try to include everyone in the group.
