Washington the District of Columbia is located on the East Coast of the U.S.A.. It was chosen by George Washington (the first president) as permanent site for American nation‘s capital on December 1,1800

There are many places of interest in Washington D.C. Among them: the White House, the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol, the National Mall and museums.

Like any other capital, Washington always has a lot of tourists. People from other countries and all parts of the United States come to Washington (which stands on the Potomac river) every day. They want to look at the remarkable objects.

The White House always has been the official residence of all presidents of the U.S.A, except of George Washington. John Adams was the first president to live there. This the oldest public building has the most famous address in the U.S Pennsylvania Avenue. Open for the tourists from 10 a.m. to noon.

This federal building was designed by an architect James Hoban. At first it was called the President‘s House. It was originally grey in colour, but during the British-American War, when the Americans fought for their Independence, the British entered Washington and on August 24,1814 the President‘s House was burnt.

Some years later the President‘s House was rebuilt and the walls were painted white. So people began calling the president's residence the White House; but it didn‘t become its official name until 1902.

From miles around can be seen this tall structure on the hill behind the White House. It looks like a very big pencil. This monument was built in honor of George Washington. It opens daily from 8 a.m. to midnight.

Washington‘s government buildings include the White House and the Capitol. The Capitol is the tallest building in Washington D.C. and the most famous building in the U.S.A. because laws are made here.

The Capitol is surrounded by a beautiful garden. It opens for the tourists daily:9.00 a.m p.m.

This majestic building is the Supreme Court. This is the place where the laws are interpreted by the highest judges in the United States.

The Lincoln Memorial was built in honor of Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln became the 16th president of the U.S.A. in 1861 (He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation). Inside the memorial is a huge statue of the president.

The Jefferson Memorial was built in honor of Thomas Jefferson. He was the third president of the U.S. (the Declaration of Independence was written by him). Inside the memorial is a 19-foot statue of Thomas Jefferson standing on a 6-foot pedestal.

The National Mall is the area between the Capitol and the Washington Monument. Bikeways, footpaths, information kiosks, and the refreshment stands are located on the Mall.

One of the best hobbies to have in Washington D.C. is reading, because of the Library of Congress. It is the largest national library in the world.
