1 Presidents' Day and Washington D.C.

2 Presidents' Day is a bank holiday in the United States
Presidents' Day is a bank holiday in the United States. It is celebrated every year on the third Monday of February. This year, Presidents' Day is on 21 February.

3 The holiday began in 1880, and was known as “Washington's Birthday”
The holiday began in 1880, and was known as “Washington's Birthday”. It was celebrated every year on February 22nd, which was the birthday of the first President of the United States, George Washington. The holiday celebrated the life of George Washington and his contributions to our country.

4 In 1971, the holiday permamently moved to the third Monday in February
In 1971, the holiday permamently moved to the third Monday in February. Now, the holiday hardly ever falls on George Washington's actual birthday, so it's now called “Presidents' Day,” and commemorates all past presidents of the United States. But it mostly focuses on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

5 Schools in the US have shorter vacations for Christmas and Easter than in Spain, so they have a week of vacation in February. Presidents' Day is always the first Monday of that vacation. Banks and businesses always used to close for Presidents' Day, but now banks and businesses often stay open and have sales.

6 Before leaving for February vacation, American students often learn something about US history or one of the presidents to celebrate Presidents' Day. A popular story American children learn about is George Washington and his cherry tree.

7 The story is that George Washington, when he was six years old, was playing with his hatchet and cut down his father's favorite cherry tree. Even though his father was very angry, George admitted to cutting it down when his father asked him about it. He said, “I cannot tell a lie!” Many people believe this did not really happen, but American children are still taught it in order to teach them the importance of honesty.

8 Washington D. C. is the capital of the United States
Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States. It is located on the east coast, which is different from Washington state, which is located on the west coast. Washington D.C is not a state, and it is not part of any state. It is a “district.” D.C stands for “District of Columbia.” Both Washington D.C and Washington state are named after our first President, George Washington.
