3 In the middle of the 15 century some European countries began to send their ships to discover the new lands. One of the explorers was Christopher Columbus from Spain. The discovery of America took place in 1492.

4 The national flag of the
USA is called “Stars and Stripes”. It has 13 red and white stripes and 50 stars on the blue field. The national Symbol of the USA is the bald eagle. It symbolizes freedom and independence.

5 The national symbol of the country is the Statue of Liberty. It is a present from France to American people. It was presented in It was designed by Frederic Bartholdi as a monument of friendship between America and France.

6 The Famous American Presidents
George Washington was the first person to be elected the American president Thomas Jefferson was the third American president who wrote “Declaration of Independence” Abraham Lincoln became the sixteenth president. He wrote “Emancipation Proclamation”

7 Washington, D.C. The White House is the official residence of the
American presidents. This is where the President lives and works. It was build 1799. It consists of132 rooms. The White House has the most famous address in the USA – 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The president of the USA is Barak Obama.

8 The Capitol The Capitol is the seat where the American
Congress sits. It is a symbol of American power. It was built on the Capitol Hill in 1791.

9 Washington monument One of the most impressive
sights in Washington is the famous Washington Monument. It looks like a huge pencil and it is called “The Pencil”. The Monument was constructed in 1888. It is the highest construction in the USA. There is an elevator in the monument which brings visitors to the top of it.

10 New York New York is the city with the biggest population
in the USA. It is about 19 mln people, who speaks 75 different languages. It is a business, financial and cultural centre.

15 Empire State Building This is one of the tallest
buildings in the world. It is a skyscraper with 102 floors.

16 Twin Towers The buildings of the World Trade Center were the tallest in the city. But in 2001 on September 11 th a great tragedy happened in New York – they were destroyed in a terrorist attack. Two planes flew into the Twin Towers. This event really shocked the world.

17 Chicago Chicago is the second largest city after New
York. This city is in the state of Illinois. It is an important transportation centre, as well as the business, financial and cultural centre.

20 San Francisco It is one of the largest cities of the state
California. This city is situated on the coast of the Pacific ocean.

21 San Francisco is famous for its bridges,
especially for the Golden Gate Bridge between the Pacific ocean and San Francisco Bay.

Massachusetts. It is one of the first towns which were founded on the Atlantic coast. The world-famous Harvard University is located there.
