 College students are facing many challenges ◦ rises in college tuition and student debt ◦ reduced financial aid packages ◦ a decrease in basic college courses offered One way to raise your voice for change is to register your student community to vote!

 All team members must learn how to register voters. To complete the training, just review the contest rules, this power point and complete the Quiz. the quiz back to  by noon, September 27,  Once all members of your team complete the quiz, your team captain will be notified that your team is certified for the contest.  Filling out the voter registration form is easy, but you must know the rules to do it legally.

 A citizen of the United States who is  18 years of age by election day. ◦ If a person registers and/or votes who is NOT eligible, they can be deported immediately and can never become a US citizen.  A legal resident of Washington state for at least 30 days prior to election day.

 People born in America Samoa and Swains Island are U.S. Nationals but not necessarily U.S. Citizens. American Samoans must apply for citizenship. Having a U.S. Passport does not in itself, signify U.S. Citizenship.

 You move to a new address  You change your name  To update, just fill out the information on the bottom of the Voter Registration Form under “former registration”

Are you a U.S. Citizen and will you be 18 before Nov 3, 2015? ◦ Make sure they fill in the yes/no questions under qualifications. If they say no to either question, they must NOT register to vote. ◦ Especially important for non-citizens. They could be deported for registering to vote and/or voting!

 Ask the student for his/her WA Driver’s License OR the last four digits of his/her social security number.  If the voter is comfortable, you can copy down the WA driver’s license/state ID number on the form. (Make sure you copy *asterisks)  Photo id is not required to register

While a phone number and address are not required, it is very helpful to organizations like APACEvotes so we can contact AA and PI voters with information about candidate forums, reminders to mail in their ballots, and other voter education information.

 When registering voters, say, “Once you have completed the form, I will double-check to make sure you have all the required information. Then you can sign your form and you’re all set!”  Check the form to make sure it is complete and hand it back to them to sign! It is not valid without a signature!”

If someone is already registered, encourage them to fill out a Pledge to Vote form! Every ½ point counts!

 “My vote doesn’t make a difference” ◦ In WA state elections have been very close. In 2008, the Governor’s race was won by 250 votes! Every vote counts!  “I’ve never gotten around to registering.” ◦ Now is your chance, I am here, I have the pen and the form. It will take only a few minutes. Or you can register on-line on.  I don’t want to be called for jury duty.” ◦ If you have a WA driver’s license, you are in the pool for jury.

 “I’m disgusted with politics!” ◦ Then do something to change it! You have the power to change politicians and policies that impact your life. No vote, no grumble!  “I didn’t know I could vote!” ◦ If you are 18, a U.S. Citizen and not under the authority of the Department of Corrections (on parole or doing community service), you can vote!  “I don’t know what’s going on.” ◦ APACEvotes can keep you informed about issues impacting the AAPI student community.

 Paper Voter Registration Forms and Pledge to Vote Forms need to be submitted to APACEvotes by noon, Oct. 3, 2015!  Online ◦ Go to the APACEvotes.org website and click on the button that says Register to Vote (Rock the Vote) rtv468x60v2 rtv468x60v2  The advantage of registering online is that it is available in 11 AA and PI languages! You must keep a list of names of people who register on line so we can credit your team. Submit this list with your other forms.
