1 VOTER REGISTRATION IN FLORIDA
Information provided by Organizing for America.

2 Voter registration in Florida: how we win
When Democrats vote, Democrats win Registering large numbers of voters helps us not only in the short term but in the years to come as well. Our Field effort to elect more Democrats in 2018, 2019, and 2020 will focus on these two things: Growing the electorate by registering new voters Getting current registrants out to vote

3 Voter Registration Laws in Florida- Understanding the law
All third party organizations have to register with the Division of Elections Once registered, the third party organization receives a registration number Each voter registration collected needs to be date and time stamped immediately when the registration is completed JYD has a maximum of 10 days to turn in the completed registration to the county supervisor of elections ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST RETURN FORMS THE SAME DAY!

4 Voter registration laws in Florida
Registration Period The registration deadline is 29 days before the election Who can Register? Can register to vote at 16, but must be 18 on E-Day to cast a ballot Must be a US citizen and FL resident Must NOT have been convicted of a felony unless your rights have been restored Must NOT now be adjudicated mentally incapacitated Must provide a valid FL drivers license # or FL ID # (or last 4 digits of Social Security number if they have no ID—but this can create problems, such as a longer period to get your voter card and so on)

5 Voter registration laws in Florida
Reregistering Voters: Address change: Under the new law, if you moved outside your county, you must reregister Party change: switching partisanship Florida has closed primaries Name change: marriage, etc. Signature update: if it has changed When in doubt – fill it out!

6 Florida Voter Registration Form:
REQUIRED REQUIRED

7 Florida Voter Registration Form:
REQUIRED VERY IMPORTANT Telephone No. REQUIRED

8 Common errors Confirm all checkboxes (Lines A, B, C) are marked
Confirm that ID# is completed Confirm that name is completed all the way across the form Confirm that date of birth does not use 2017 as year ALWAYS encourage registrants to complete the entire form, including optional fields! Forms MUST be date and time stamped immediately upon completion

9 Registering voters Approach the registrant and introduce yourself—be open and friendly Don’t get discouraged by folks brushing you off; it happens to everyone, and it’s a part of the process Ask the person if they want to update their voter registration When in doubt—reregister Guide them down the page, making sure they fill out every required form Conspicuously date/time stamp the forms Thank the person for their time, and engage them about the campaign once the form has been completed if you think it is appropriate

10 Don’t coach! Any person can register for any party, and you must bring it in no matter what party they select When it comes to selecting a party, you cannot “coach” the person on what party to register for in an overtly partisan way You cannot offer any incentives to register

11 Being Compliant Verify the time and date with the person signing the form after you register them, and write both down conspicuously in front of them Do not lose forms or give forms away Do not print out forms yourself, or pick up other forms from other locations Do not write “void” or “spoiled” on forms that aren’t finished You must bring all forms back to the location you got them from on the same day so that they can be double-checked for errors, data entered, and dropped off the next day

12 Best Practices Make sure you have your partner’s phone number and vice versa Don’t get discouraged! Coming back without all your forms (or any forms!) filled out is okay! PLEASE let us know “what and where” works & “what and where” doesn’t Don’t stay discouraged! If the location you are canvassing is slow, feel free to move around It’s okay if you are asked to move/leave Ask “Have you updated your voter registration?” Have registrants use a BLACK pen Don’t wear sunglasses and make sure to SMILE!

13 Q&A ?

14 Quiz and Affirmation!
