What is Petroleum? Raw material is called Crude oil Commonly known as “Black Gold” Ranges in color from black to green-brown to colorless Can be liquid like water or thick like tar

Energy Used as an energy source 70% of petroleum is used for fuel Only meets about 36% of our energy needs 70% of petroleum is used for fuel What things might use petroleum for fuel?

Why is it so important? There are many products that use petroleum as its starting material Medications Plastics Road Paving Refer to the common items list from yesterday

Where in the world? 56% in 5 Middle eastern nations Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates 16% of world reserves are in North America Use of petroleum is not uniformily distributed US uses most per population
