Parts of Speech Parts of Speech We organize grammar into parts of speech. Learning how to use parts of speech will help you build sentences and improve your writing.

There are eight parts of speech: Noun Pronoun Verb Adjective Adverb Preposition Conjunction Interjection

A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. Parts of Speech A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. Person: Your brother is awake. Place: Let’s walk to the park. Thing: The dog jumps high. Idea: My happiness lasted all day.

José is my friend. He is my friend. Parts of Speech A pronoun takes the place of one or more nouns. Some pronouns include I, you, he, she, it, we, and they. José is my friend. He is my friend.

A verb expresses an action or a state of being. Parts of Speech A verb expresses an action or a state of being. Action: Ivan built a model airplane. State of Being: The airplane is red.

Brandon carried the heavy box up the stairs. Parts of Speech An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. Brandon carried the heavy box up the stairs.

Linda sang beautifully at the talent show. Parts of Speech An adverb describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Linda sang beautifully at the talent show.

Tim and Kiya are in my class. I like red apples but not green apples. Parts of Speech A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. Coordinating conjunctions include and, but, and or. Tim and Kiya are in my class. I like red apples but not green apples. Would you like a fork or a spoon?

Parts of Speech An interjection expresses emotion. It may stand alone or appear as part of the sentence. Hey, did you see that? Wow! That was amazing.
