Compound Subjects and Compound Predicates Today’s Learning Objective: I will be able to identify a conjunction, a compound subject, and a compound predicate in a sentence.

First, Lets Review! What is the simple subject in the example below? The cat was left out in the rain. What is the simple predicate in the same example?

Yay! More Review What is the complete subject in the example below? The popular band, Mumford and Sons, created songs that are perfect to listen to while studying. What is the complete predicate in the same example?

Time to Build on Prior Knowledge Today we are going to learn about compound subjects and compound predicates. Before we go any further, what do you know about compound subjects and predicates thus far in your academic career?

Lets Relate This to Reality! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjd8bLli8WA

Conjunctions There are two types of conjunctions associated with compound subjects and compound predicates (i.e. compound verbs). Coordinating conjunctions Correlative conjunctions

Coordinating Conjunctions COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS connect words of the same kind, such as two or more nouns or verbs. They can also connect larger groups of words, such as prepositional phrases or even entire sentences. Coordinating conjunctions are words that help to join two separate parts of a sentence together. We can remember all the coordinating conjunctions with the acronym FANBOYS. For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

Coordinating Conjunction Diagrams

Correlative Conjunctions CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS connect the same kinds of words or groups of words as do coordinating conjunctions, but correlative conjunctions are used in pairs. Correlative conjunctions both…and Either…or Neither…nor Not only…but also Whether…or

Find the junction! Directions: locate all the conjunction in the examples listed below. Then on the line next to each sentence identify the type of conjunction is used in the sentence (i.e. Coordinating or Correlative). Either you or I will be the leader on the trail. Put the luggage on the doorstep or in the garage. Our family wanted to go to the White House, but we decided to go to the Capital first. We have seen both the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon Dam. correlative coordinating coordinating correlative

Compound Subjects Sometimes, the subject of a sentence includes more than one noun. This is called a compound subject. The multiple nouns in compound subjects are always joined together by conjunctions. EXAMPLE: My FRIENDS AND I went to Prep Fiesta yesterday.

Compound Predicates Sometimes, the predicate of a sentence includes more than one verb. This is called a compound predicate. The multiple verbs in compound predicates are always joined together by conjunctions. EXAMPLE: We LAUGHED, DANCED, AND ATE all day long!

More Examples DIRECTIONS: If the sentence has a compound subject, identify all the simple subjects in the sentence. If the sentence has a compound predicate, identify all the simple predicates (verbs) in the sentence. Dan picked up the bat and hit the ball. Wally loves apples but hates bananas. Karen and Jeff are both going to I Love the 90’s night. Bears in Alaska eat a lot of fish but also hunt for berries. Russians, Germans, and Romans used the eagle as a symbol of national pride.

Work-Time Turn to the person sitting next to you. Use the next couple minutes to discuss the meaning of compound subjects and compound predicates. I need one pair of students to raise their hands and share what they came up with.

Lets put the new knowledge to work!! Write THREE descriptive sentences. The first sentence has to include a compound subject. The second sentence has to include a compound predicate. Then the third sentence has to include both a compound subject and compound predicate.
