Sports Leaders UK Provide nationally recognised leadership awards and qualifications Help people develop essential life skills such as organisation, motivation, communication and working with others Practical - learners learn by doing rather than through written work Awards A starting point on the leadership pathway that begin for children aged 9+ Qualifications For learners aged 13+ On the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Compliment delivery of other programmes such as KS4 National Curriculum in Physical Education, 'A' Level PE, BTEC in Sport & Recreation

The health landscape

Prevalence of excess weight among children National Child Measurement Programme 2013/14 4Patterns and trends in child obesity Child overweight (including obesity)/ excess weight: BMI ≥ 85 th centile of the UK90 growth reference One in five children in Reception is overweight or obese (boys 23.4%, girls 21.6%) One in three children in Year 6 is overweight or obese (boys 35.2%, girls 31.7%)

What should they be doing? Children aged 5-18 should do at least 60 minutes physical activity each day Range between moderate – intensity activity and vigorous - intensity activity At least 3 times a week these activities should include muscle strengthening activities and bone strengthening activities. Eating Healthily Developing understanding of healthy food and lifestyle choices

Primary PE and Sport Premium £450 million investment over first 3 years Commitment from existing Government to continue it to 2020 To help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and Sports activities they offer their pupils. The allocation of this funding raised a big question…

How best to use the funding?

Inspecting Primary School PE and Sport : new funding In this 2014 report Ofsted provide an appendix of examples of effective use of PE and sport funding. Sports Leaders UK provide 3 initiatives which all meet specific examples from Ofsted’s guidance.

Is your school… procuring quality-assured professional training for staff to raise their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport? Level 5/6 Professional Qualifications in Primary School Physical Education Specialism and Subject Leadership –Accredited professional training for teachers and HLTAs (afPE)

Is your school… introducing new initiatives such as basic movement skills in the Early Years Foundation Stage, or developing young sports leaders in Key Stage 2? PlayMaker –For young leaders aged 9+ –Practical –Delivered by you –Using Sports Leaders UK resources –Certificated Award –PlayMakers put their learning into practice and develop confidence –Taking on additional leadership challenges enables the children to achieve additional bronze, silver and gold certificates.

Growing your own Sports Leaders The benefits of having pupil Sports Leaders in your school are: You have an army of role models and Ambassadors to encourage take up of sport and physical activity especially for pupils who do not traditionally get involved You have a team of helpers that can assist in lessons, clubs, sports days and lunchtime activities You are developing the skills of young people by developing them as Leaders and developing your teachers as their trainers and mentors SL0663 Issue 1 07/14

Is your school… providing places for pupils in after-school sport clubs and holiday courses? promoting health and wellbeing of all pupils, especially those who are overweight or obese? providing additional activities to encourage those children who tend not to participate in sport and physical activity to take part? linking with parents/carers to promote health and wellbeing? using governors and adults other than teachers to run sports teams, after school clubs and assist in organising large school sports events? providing training and payment for midday supervisors to introduce playground games at breaks and lunchtimes? introducing new initiatives such as basic movement skills in the Early Years Foundation Stage, or developing young sports leaders in Key Stage 2?

Energy Club –A fun, physical activity club for children aged 4-7 and 7-11 –Encourages children to play and learn about healthy food choices through fun, energetic activities –Fun for all and engages less active children –Develops movement skills –Healthy messages include ideas to take home thereby engaging with parents and carers Sports Leaders UK provide: –Leadership training for adults (teachers, TAs, lunchtime supervisors, governors, parents and volunteer) –Activity cards to enable you to run Energy Clubs at KS1 and KS2 (30 sessions for each KS)

Costs Energy Club Training Day £249 for the training for up to 8 schools/25 participants Plus £50 per school for licence to access resources online Example 1 school = £299 3 schools share a day = £133 each Cost is per school, not per person.
