LEADERSHIP CONTINUUM Classical Leadership Style Leadership behavior can be classified in terms of how much involvement leaders have with people related VS work related issues

The Boss Centered Versus Employee Centered Leadership Continuum The behavior chosen characterize different leadership styles. The leader can be highly boss centered and concentrate on work related issues more rather then employees The leaders can be employee centered, for which employees are more important than work. There are ranges from high boss centered to high employee centered.

The Autocratic-Participative-Free-Rein Continuum Amount of authority held by leader Autocratic Style Participative Style Free-Rein

Autocratic Leadership Style Retain more authority for themselves Make decision confidently and ask groups to comply Usually, not concerned about group attitude towards decision Task oriented, emphasis task accomplishment Typical autocratic behaviors include : Telling people what to do Asserting themselves Serving as a model for team members

Participative Leadership Style Share decision making with group member Consultative Confer with group before making a decision Retain final authority to make decision Consensus Leaders strive for consensus Concerned worker give their inputs Decision is taken when all involved agree Russell Salzman Executive Director Chambers of Commerce
